OFFS.

If Finn had bitched at, bullied, berated or blackballed Santana, I'd be willing to get into the nitty gritty of 'own medicine' with you. Maybe.

But he outed her. He fucking outed her on a show that purports to be strong on LGBT issues. With no consequences for him at all.

He outed her, and the story cast him as the hero instead of as the idiot who should have been smacked upside the head by his gay brother followed by everybody else in the cast for a Very Special Episode about how you never ever ever ever out somebody else.

I'm sorry that you missed out on a friendship you enjoy. But no fucking part of that blame lies with the fans who called Glee on its shit.

Yeah, he outed her and then they had Santana pretty much thanking him for outing her. Because in Glee land men are always right and always the heroes, helping the poor wittle women even if they don't think or realize they need the help.

Didn't Santana out Kurt earlier in the series?

Not saying that means SHE deserved to be outed but...actually I don't remember where I was going with this. That show is stupid as hell and it hasn't made sense in forever

Re: &

I think Kurt outed himself with his first words.

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
People keep saying this, but I can't remember it?

Like, there's a bit in S1 where this exchange happens:

Kurt: (Addressing the club) Can we please talk about the elephant in the room?

Santana: Your sexuality?

The conversation moves on. It's a bitchy Santana jab, it's not an outing.

Maybe there's another buried in there somewhere, but I don't remember it. And this is the one that I've seen mentioned in some - frankly bizarre - beatifications of Finn.

Re: &

Also Kurt had already come out himself in the previous ep.

To Burt and Mercedes. We never saw him come out to the whole class, they just assumed it.

Wait, didn't Brittany already out Santana on her video blog episodes before? With pretty much no consequence? This show is so goddamn stupid

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC Brittany was all "I didn't mean I was outing you as gay, it was this other thing that MAKES ZERO SENSE."

Re: &

YOU CAN'T SEE ME RIGHT NOW BUT I'M BANGING MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL

Also, this reminds me: I HATE how fucking stupid they made Brittany (she was already dumb in the first season, but it seemed like her character had been eating a diet of lead paint chips or something because she just kept getting less and less intelligent). I've always disliked it when tv shows made characters so dumb they can barely dress themselves. Brittany is so child like (she still thought babies came from a STORK) that it got to the point where I was honestly skeeved out by any pairings involving her

I found her development massively frustrating too. Brittany's stupidity (though I sort of hesitate to call it that) worked well during the first season, when the show at least seemed to operate in some kind of satrical alterate reality. Then as the tone of the show began to shift, they decided to take her character in the opposite direction. I'm not even going to ask how anyone could've thought that this was a good idea because everyone knows that tptb over at Glee give zero thought to this shit.

I had a hard time shipping Brittana because of this, too (among some other unfortunate things the show did with these two characters. Shipping her with anyone would require me to forget half the show or do some pretty impressive character meta acrobatics.

Are you talking about how Santana was creepily obsessed with/possessive of Britanny (to the point where I'm pretty sure there was a part in the show where Santana tricked Brittany into either having sex with or making out with her because she convinced her that it wasn't cheating if it was with another woman, which made Artie upset). And there was also that scene where Santana wanted to win Prom Queen because she thought she would be able to convince Brittany that she would be obligated to be with her since she would be a "subject" to her Queen. GLEE, I KNOW YOU'RE PLAYING THIS SHIT FOR LAUGHS AND WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY BUT YOU'RE BASICIALLY MAKING SANTANA OUT TO BE A RAPIST, HOLY CHRIST

sa

Wow, I guess Glee makes me really angry. I'm so glad I stopped watching the show

Yeah, those came to mind :(

I don't even know how to go about thinking about some of those things? That Santana has the power to manipulate her like that (because she's legitmately that dumb, apparently) skeeves me out, for starters.

I do think that Santana might've objectively known that it's not okay to do those things even as she did them, but she did anyways because she obviously had a lot of issues she needed to work out. That could've been a really interesting thing to delve into, it could've been character-building, story-telling gold. Instead we got a lot of awkward scenes that failed to endear me to the ship. As you said, some of those things might have been jokes but Glee's become such a jarring juxtaposition of satire and playing it straight THAT YOU JUST NEVER KNOW ANYMORE

so instead everything just seems really inappropriate and awful

yay glee

nayrt

Yeah, I agree about the Brittany thing. It stopped being funny a long time ago. She genuinely thought Santa Claus could restore Artie's ability to walk and she rinses her mouth out with soda, and I know that shit was played for laughs but I still seriously side eyed my screen. There's something wrong with that girl

Re: &

that glee believes it has a strong stance on any issue strikes me as kind of tragic (not because i'm against the idea of shows bringing light to issues, but because glee is just a clusterfuck of writing and ends up contradicting itself and perpetrating more harm than good half the time)

but yeah, i agree with you. whether santana deserves a taste of her own medicine or not is an entirely different argument. whatever your feelings are on that doesn't change the fact that there is no excuse for outing someone. nor does it change how shitty it is that the show didn't reflect that, and that finn walked out scot-free (as he usually does). outing someone is not "fair retribution." making a major life decision for someone is not the same as issuing insults. you could be putting someone in danger, ffs.

Re: &

Thank you for saying this.

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a gay person so I understand the extremities of being outed. I've been outed by people who are supposed to be my friends. And they're constantly reminding me that I'm gay. It's fucking annoying that I can't just breathe my own air or just be whoever I am. I don't want to hear that I'm gay all the time. Yet, I do. That said, Santana was a bully. She dragged other people down. Constantly. So yeah, she got her own medicine.

And whatever Finn did wasn't exactly "nice" but he didn't do it to be a nasty person. Or because he was miserable and he wanted her to be miserable. He did it out of spite. But he was the only one that recognized that there was more than meets the eye. He saw past her mean attitude and he wanted her to be the amazing person that he saw her as. That's why I love them. It's the only friendship on the show that came from someone seeing a person as more than just their hollow reflection.
