Secretly-nice-but-can't-show-it characters?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone give me more examples of character who are secretly nice and have big soft spots/sentimental or idealistic streaks/sweet aspects, but due to their own insecurities or the nature of their lives/jobs or something, they just can't bring themselves to admit it? So like, they do nice stuff secretly, or try to do nice things in an assholish manner because they're too embarrassed to do it any other way? That kind of thing?

I am just so in love with and relate so hard to this character type that I just need MOAR. I want to know all about them! And not characters that are just "kind of nice, kind of jerky", but characters who make a conscious effort to conceal their niceness.

Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly is pretty much like this. He's a great guy, but he's kind of an ass on the surface, to most people. And when he does nice things he likes it that it stays quiet. Plus he's hilarious.

Batman! He's the ultimate "angry dad" but he's perfectly willing to say "good job" -- if you get it perfect.

Early seasons House? Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities! (I'm reading it)

Oh, man, Sydney Carton is so freakin' rad.

I should reread that book. so good.

Man, I love these kinds of characters because I just cannot for the life of me say nice stuff openly IRL because it makes me die of embarrassment, even though I'd definitely call myself uber-sensitive.

Hmmm...I'd check out the Hidden Heart of Gold page on tvtropes for more, but some of my faves: Han Solo, Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Minerva McGonagall, Toby Ziegler (The West Wing), Dr Cox (Scrubs), Ron Swanson (Parks and Rec), Mal Reynolds (Firefly), Cordelia Chase (Buffy), Charles Emerson Winchester (MASH), Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother...although he's only genuinely nice about a very few things, all related to either kids or his friends), Peter Benton (ER)...I know there's more but I'm blanking.

Also, IIRC, Rattrap's schtick in Beast Wars was pretending he hated everyone and thought they were idiots and claiming that he didn't give a flying fuck about anything but himself, and failing miserably at proving it.

I loved Charles on MASH. After Frank left I was expecting him to be similar, all bragging and no skill, but he was really quite fantastic. He doesn't get enough love, really.

Does Doctor McCoy from Star Trek: TOS count?

I'm surprised no one mentioned her yet, but...Helga from Hey Arnold. She's very insecure about herself, due to her mother being an alcoholic and her father being completely apathetic and a workaholic. (He rarely remembers her name) They've doted on her older sister all her life and sort of neglected her, so she puts on a huge "stand-offish, I hate everything" attitude despite being kind deep down. She goes through large roundabout ways to help people, mostly her love interest Arnold.

Cleo Denile from Monster High.

Acts like the typical High School queen bee, but actually cares a LOT for her friends. But she feels like she has to live up to her sister's reputation and her father's reputation (this is a good portion of the plot of the new Ghoul's Rule movie...if you can accept a lot of product placement and cheesy jokes you should check it out). She has a lot of supportive friends who bring out her good side as well as a really sweet boyfriend who understands that she has some issues.

In fact all the traits you're looking for are illustrated pretty well in this short: http://youtu.be/GgtGoE74QFs

Richard B. Riddick, escaped convict, murder.

Leave him alone, he'll leave you alone. Get in his way, you're dead.

But if he likes you, he'll get himself arrested, manipulate his way to the jail you're in, break you both out, outrun a wall of fire, and kill a tyrant for you.

This is a real golden oldie, but: Lou Grant from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". He was always trying to act like a gruff, macho jerk when he was really just a complete pushover.

When he is first introduced, Ben Wyatt from Parks and Rec is like this. As the specifics of his job and his relationship with the town change, he is able to be more open about helping, but his old self is still referred to as "Mean Ben".

Howl from "Howl's Moving Castle" (mostly in the book) carefully cultivates a reputation as a shiftless womanizing terror, but it's an elaborate cover for all the time he spends secretly trying to help everyone around him, to the point that almost nobody really knows he's anything but what he seems until key points late in the story. He doesn't want people to know he cares because he fears obligation (and actually proving himself as undependable as he pretends to be), and also is kind of missing his heart for awhile so he finds interesting ways to circumvent his own selfish nature.

This is sort of a spoiler, since it's supposed to be something of a surprise in-canon when he's not a big fat jerk, but it's probably one of the first things you'll discover if you'll stumble upon the fandom, so...if you don't mind spoilers much, read on anon!

Fakir from Princess Tutu. He's standoffish towards the protagonist, Ahiru, and often mistreats his roommate Mytho so badly he comes off as an "abusive boyfriend" type at times. But he has reasons--screwed up as they are--for his treatment of Ahiru and Mytho, and throughout the series he slooooowly comes to terms with the events in his past that have made him who he is and realizes that his behavior is hurting the people he cares about more than he helps them. He softens considerably in the second season but is still a little gruff to people, mostly due to insecurities.

Trisana Chandler from Circle of Magic. Also Rosethorn :P
And... I guess Dean Winchester from SPN? Sort of?
