Why not just use they and them?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because they and them are not necessarily singular pronouns. Zie and zir are understood as singular gender neutral pronouns.

Not really. The average person on the street would recognize using "they/them" as a singular, genderless pronoun before zie and zir.

Sigh

Really people I just want to celebrate. Can we stop getting hung up on the words my friend wants to use and just celebrate? I at no point intended any offense but I stand by the fact they and them is plural but I also know people can and I think should use them singularly. I think there's a good discussion to be held around the development of a gender neutral singular pronoun. But this is a celebration thread not a meeting of the MLA.

Why get caught up on that? I mean if you want to, I can play that game. They and them are plural. You can argue they're singular but almost every single English teacher will fight you on it. Quoting Oxford English Dictionary won't help. Zie and zir and their equivalents are singular. I'm talking about one person. So stop being petty. You can be here to party or you can GTFO cuz I'm not having that today.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trans, so I would party, except I find it insulting you can't use a word that exists and people actually understand and are familiar with, rather than some ridiculous-looking arrangement of letters, which make it seem as if trans people are some strange alien breed that will never fit in, altogether separate from the rest of the population. No one gives a crap if you're gramatically correct, and every English teacher I ever had used they and them in speech (which is essentially what we're doing here) and suggested that if you wanted to get formal in an essay: "he or she", "him or her".

And my friend is genderqueer and we had a discussion about what type of pronouns to use. So you can be offended but I get why zie wants to use zie. And yeah, if you want to use they and them that's fine. I'm not here to dictate language but it would be helpful if you could understand that I'm nor are others using zie/variants of that to be anything other than gender neutral. If my friend were a transman I would use he. But zie is genderqueer and doesn't want to use they.

So get on your party hat.

lol at you telling a trans person they can be offended if they want to

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Lol at you misunderstanding me.
