Oh, yes. This. I think it's okay if one uses the occupation of the character (like "the scientist" or "the spy"), but "brunette" and "blonde" for some reason completely freak me out. Well, I don't know, maybe I have some issued with hair colour. "Red", by the way, doesn't really annoy me.
And all those "blue-eyed", "the older man" and "the yonger girl" are disastrous.

When it comes to younger/older, shorter/taller, the differences are usually not even that big. It would be like calling my friend "the older one" because she's 3 entire days older than me. Or the shorter one because of one centimeter. But of course, in the world of yaoi fic, characters shrink, grow and age inexplicably.

I think it also works with relationships -- "his brother", "her cousin", "his partner", etc.

I think it's okay if it's in the style of old heroic epithets.

"Jenny, the blond-haired, knowledge-gainer, eldest-born, was taking the elevator up to the thirteenth floor when..."

Boy always creeps me out. I am NOT into reading surprise!underage fic, thanks.

Yeah, I'm not a writer myself but I would imagine extremes of any kind are probably no-nos. . .? Though some extremes are much more unbearable to read than others.

I once heard someone say that epithets can be appropriately used, even if we know the character's name, if they're used to emphasise something about the character. I thought that sounded about right (but as I said, I'm not a writer). Your occupation example could fit that, but I really doubt someone's haircolour would ever be that important to the narrative (and if it was, would I even want to be reading that story?)

I think that using the character's job works fine - most of the time. Like if you have a character who's a general, referring to him as "the general" in fic is fine, especially if he's in his office, or addressing troops, or acting as a general. I find it jarring if you refer to him as the general when he's at home wearing stained sweatpants and eating a bowl of cereal on the couch while watching daytime TV. Yeah, he's still technically a general, but he's not being one at the moment.
