Also the fact that LOTR dates back from a time where internet didn't exist, but instead there were penpals etc. who you can't find trace of now, so who is to tell a book didn't have a tiny fandom somewhere right after it got sold back then.

Well, it kind of depends what you mean by "fandom".

If you mean "writing fic", then most things didn't have a fandom. If you just mean being involved in discussions and recommendations and hyping things up and generally being fannish about stuff, then yes, in the sense that most science fiction and fantasy books, at least, were tied up with science fiction and fantasy fandom.

I think the only fandoms that really wrote a lot of fic back in the day was Sherlock Holmes. And then Lord of the Rings somewhat, and then Star Trek.
