Couldn't you write the fanfic then read through it after with a keen eye for anything that could be considered spoilers? It was incredibly nice for the author to actually respond to you (not sure I've ever read of that happening before), but if you want to write fanfic and don't think they'll be in anyway offended by it, I think you should. Or...guess you could do what tasogare_n_hime suggested and not post it (at least not yet).

If there's a fandom though...are you sure this information isn't already somewhere on the web? Because if you thought to write the author, maybe someone else did too? (Or email them. Whatever.)

I've heard of some authors who respond [I know for a fact that Piers Anthony responds at least some of the time from what he's said in various author's notes, for example], but I don't think I've heard of an author who gives away where the plot is going. Though...I'm a little confused by the whole 'No sequel' thing...since that could also mean that the author isn't writing one, and the OP just wanted to know where it was going? In which case, I don't see why it would be an issue if the OP ended up having some of that in their fanfic, since it's never been written/will be written.

IKR? That's a little unusual. I guess if they aren't planning on a sequel they might want to give their fans closure in whatever way possible. Pretty awesome of them, actually.

Though...I'm a little confused by the whole 'No sequel' thing

I took it as the author stating that a sequel isn't going to happen, or at least isn't very likely to happen, but the OP doesn't want to include what they were told just in case the series ever gets a continuation. I can sort of understand where they're coming from, but...I doubt anyone is going to care too much about one fanfic. Even if anon does include some of what the author passed onto them, OP would probably change things as they saw fit, so I doubt their story would perfectly fit the authors vision.
