Re: Fandoms popping up overnight

Idk whether LOTR is the best example of a new fandom, seeing as the already established book fanbase/fandom was poised and waiting (some even for years) for the movie release(s), so it's no wonder the internet fandom sprung up quickly.

In terms of fandoms starting more quickly these days, I just think that's because people are better at/know the drill of LJ/DW/Tumblr fandom now. Which means that the moment someone even remotely likes something it's *boom* BNF posting to their large authorship about their favourite shiny new thing! *boom* kinkmeme! *boom* ONE BILLION ANIMATED GIF SETS WITH STUPID COLOUR SCHEMES! However, just because people get started on this stuff earlier, doesn't actually mean that fandom is going to stick around or even take off at all.

But I do agree that all the readysetgo fandom schema that's going on at the moment doesn't bode well for the longevity of current active fandoms, since they'll always be something new to move on to. Not having something better - and well publicized, and of the same genre - on the horizon is why I assume fandoms like Highlander and The Sentinel stuck around for so long.

/sorry for the essay

Agreed on the LOTR example, I was on a forum a few years before the movie came out, and we talked about the books, predominantly (as well as doing a lot of movie speculation, of course!).

Things like Tumblr allow for something to get spread a hell of a lot faster than it did ten years ago, when you'd have to make a forum or a chatroom then hope people found it. Now, just search for something you're interested in, found it, there.

Agreed on longevity, too. Entmoot (the forum I was at) is STILL GOING.
