Because writers who abuse them are under the impression that using a character's name or pronouns too many times is annoying to readers, not realizing that they are noticing it because it's their writing, which they're inclined to nitpick for that very reason. Readers, on the other hand, are trained to skim over pronouns and names and not find them disruptive when reading, while it's epithets that have the power to really pull you out of a story.

They do have a use -- especially when, say, you're writing limited third-person and the person being referred to by an epithet is someone whose name the POV character doesn't know, so they logically would be thinking of them as a tall man or a short girl or whatever. But there's really no reason to have a character be thinking of their best friend 5ever as "the blonde".

My nuclear, white-hot hatred, however, is reserved for shit like "the male". Are you fucking kidding me with that bullshit?

"The suspicious doelike female". No, I did not make that example up. It's from an FFVIII fic I read a while back.

That's very individualized, though. Personally I do find it annoying when a character's name is used too many times-- it's jarred me out of published writing before because I find it repetitive and irritating.
