I have this same problem, but with The Phantom of the Opera. Most of the cast has spoken dialogue that could be counted on all ten fingers, and if memory serves, the Phantom has no spoken lines in the original show. Seeing them talk in fanfics, no matter what context, just feels jarring.

But Phantom of the Opera is also based on a book. Granted, it's mostly ignored by fangirls because while it's still easy to fangirl about an insane guy who at least has half of an attractive face, it's a bit harder to fangirl about some insane guy who has a skullface instead of a real face...
