There are a lot of people who tend to use them way, way too much, when a name or a pronoun or even just a simple "the other (man/woman/child/whatever)" would suffice.

Name, yes. Pronoun, yes. "The other (man, etc.)," hell no. I hate "the other" and its variants for the same reason that OP hates epithets: the vast majority of the time it's used in situations when the POV character wouldn't think of the other character in those relational terms. The construction works fine in third person omniscient, but most fanfiction uses a tight third person or first person POV; consequently, "the other" throws me out of the story almost every time I see it.
