Plants aren't alive, insects don't have traditional heartbeats, so they aren't living creatures. And a heartbeat still doesn't change the fact that it still doesn't have a consciousness and the ability to feel emotions (or even the ability to feel instincts), which are, depending on which species we are talking about, also the requirements of life.
