They write an entire script for each episode. Would it hurt to hire another writer to help write original songs?

Though they aren't going to do that. Most of the fun is watching to hear band covers. The producers know that. So, covers it is.

That's still a lot of songs to write. You'd have some serious quality control problems.

You are underestimating production times for both TV series and writing original music. Yes, they could throw in one every now and then, but 5 song per episode? From what I understand they already have a killer schedule.

Besides, most people I know who love the sow are into it exactly because of the covers.
