X-factor is a pretty self-contained series and I don't believe you need to know too much about the X-men canon in order to get it (though I am speaking as a long-time X-men fan). Ric/Star stuff starts at issue 45 (I think).

For early Rictor/Shatterstar stuff, you have to go all the way back to the first series of X-force. I'm not sure what specific issues to read, I'm afraid

oop, meant to add that issue 1 of the current X-factor is a good place to start, it's relatively young and about to reach its 100th issue (also, the numbering goes all funny, after issue 49, issue 50 becomes issue 200. Don't ask me why)

Actually, I'd say hwc should start with the 5 issue Maddrox Mini.
It takes place right before the latest x-factor and leads directly into it.

Funny enough, someone just posted a RicStar reading list on Tumblr yesterday, for those interested in the X-Force stuff. (Myself I've only seen scans of individual scenes here and there, which given the 90s art is enough for me personally.)
