So, out of the blue I got an e-mail from HR. It's to the effects of,

"Dear [Ill_Omened],

The quality of our grad scheme was unexpectedly high, but you made a strong impression and we've kept your details on file in case a position arises that would interest you.

If you're still interested in a career position, we're advertising a newly developed [strongly information focused role leading a twenty person team].

Contact back if you're interested, the head of HR would like a meeting with you."

This has given me high hopes to say the least. God I need this job so badly, and I've got the impression that right now it's mine to lose.

That is SO COOL! That sounds like a wonderful opportunity! I don't think someone would typically write a letter like that unless you had a high chance of actually getting the position, so I think your impression is probably right.
