Physical adulthood? (possible TMI)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so... I know everyone has different types of bodies, especially depending on their genes and whatnot. For the record, I'm a mid-twenties white girl.

But I honestly think I'm a few years behind most girls/women my age, in regards to physical development. Maybe you guys can give me your thoughts?

I'm small, and I've always been small. But smaller than both of my parents, even my mother. At 4'10" I'm actually the same height as my paternal great-grandmother when she was my age. I've had some things in my life that could have possibly affected my rate of development, but I'm not sure. I was born premature, and was malnourished for some time before I started having my period.

And that's the weird thing! I started my period at a normal age, around 12. But after that, it's like everything slowed to a crawl. From puberty, I only gained 3" in height max, and maybe 10 lbs heavier.

I got sick in my late teens, enough to lose about 20lbs in a couple weeks, and I think that slowed me down further. When most girls had grown hips in their late teens, my hips finally widened out a few inches. But even for my shortness, I'm still pretty narrow. No boobs, no hips. I regularly get mistaken for being underage.

Is it even possible to have not completed physical maturity by your mid twenties as a girl, in this day and age? Am I just drastically deluded about my own level of development? is there something wrong with me? :(

I can't help much, but I've often been told that girls regularly stop growing (upwards, at least) around the time they hit their period. I know I didn't grow more than an inch after I got my period, topping out at 5'2. You may just be destined to be short and skinny. I too am often taken to be almost a decade younger than I am, and I prefer to enjoy it by using it to screw with peoples' expectations. There is little out there as enjoyable as having a nineteen-year-old talking down to you because you're so much smaller, and then cheerfully saying, "I'm actually 24. I don't really need you wisdom, oh you who are younger than The Simpsons."

As for your hips and breasts -- childbirth could make a pretty big difference in the shape of your body. A lot of women are not particularly curvy before they give birth.

Everyone grows differently. Stop comparing yourself to others. You're overanalyzing everything. It really just sounds like you're obsessed with your body like most girls are, in the negative sense. Society teaches you to hate your own body and I'm not going to say "stop that" or "you're being stupid" because that won't solve anything. Instead, maybe find someone who you can talk to about this, a friend, doctor, or therapist. Honestly? That's what it sound like you need, not random anons telling you your body is fine the way it is or fashion mag.

I got my period at 11 and have had almost the same exact body since I was 13. If I'm perfectly fine then you can be too.

Hour-glass figures are the rarest type of body for a women to have. Only 8% of women have an hour-glass shape, it's really not something to be expected.

The other body-shapes, pear and apple, account for 20% and 14% of women, respectively.

The most common body-shape for women, is in fact banana (or straight- that's your figure): 46% of the female population have this body type.

So actually, you're in the norm.

This.
It might just be your natural body shape, OP. Don't stress. :)

But if you are concerned about your period or hormones, you might want to make an appointment with your GP.

What exactly does "banana" mean? Because I'm picturing someone with a funky spine or something so they have that curve a banana has, and I'm pretty sure that's not what's meant here...

This should explain it.

This calculator is such bullshit I can't even.

The calculator isn't that great- I mainly wanted to show the diagram

I think it's an attempt to continue the fruit theme (although that still leaves "hourglass" out of the club).

Yeah, my mind went in the same direction. And added a severe skin disease as well (bright yellow with brown patches). XD

Huh. I have that body type, but didn't know it was called banana. I named it "carrot", which I like better, because my shoulders are kind of broad and then except for a little bump of my hips it gets increasingly narrower down to my feet.

Everyone has different body types, anon. Yours sounds a lot like mine. I am 5'6" and in high school I was well under 100 lbs. I didn't think it was strange because my mother has a very similar build, and she's in her 50's now and still very small. My body has changed because I've worked at it--I've deliberately gained weight, and done a lot of strength training. Even so, I'm still rather small, but I have some small curves and great abs, and that makes me happy.

I don't think you'll grow more if you're in your mid-twenties; I'm sorry to say, but your development is probably complete. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. There's a lot of nice things about being shaped like you are! Lots of designers make clothes that look great on a straight body type. You can wear a lot of things without ever wondering if they'll make you look big. Some designers are making really cute bras for women with small breasts.

And if you do want to gain weight, there are ways to do that, but be aware you might not gain it in the places you'd prefer. You can change your body with diet and exercise or surgery, if you're so inclined. Above all, do what makes you feel happy with yourself.

Women generally have finished their growing pretty soon, if not by early 20's, so it just might a harsh reality that you won't change that much height-wise, but there's nothing wrong with you!
I really did not grow any taller during or after puberty, so while I stayed 5'4" my friends all almost towered me.
Just know that there's A LOT of different body types and there's not 'something wrong with you'.

Oh OP, there are plenty of women out there who are banana shapes who are incredibly gorgeous. Just look at Milla Jovovich, Mila Kunis, or Keira Knightley! Besides, having curves isn't everything. I'm an hourglass and it's always a pain trying to find clothes.

Op, It's all about how you work it. Focus on your best assets. I bet you have killer legs and a sleek body. Wear clothes that flaunt that!

"always a pain trying to find clothes."

THISSSSSSSSSSSS sososo much this being in the 8% sucks man. Being in the 8% AND petite? You're pretty much screwed for buying off-the-rack easily. Being in the 8%, petite, AND a modest dresser?

YOU WILL ALMOST NEVER FIND ANY CLOTHES IN ANY RETAIL STORE EVEN AFTER HOURS OF LOOKING FOR ONE SPECIFIC ITEM THAT YOU NEED

/end bitter rant

Preach it. I actually have the best luck shopping at charity stores -- for some reason the stuff that fits me is the stuff people get rid of. Plus I'm not confined to whatever's in fashion that season, which is usually shit.

I have a friend in her late twenties who could pass for 14. You are, at least, not alone.

To be absolutely honest, I highly doubt you will ever grow taller. You could sill get bigger around due to aging, weight gain, and/or pregnancy, although, as was said up-thread, you don't always gain weight were you want it.

There's nothing wrong with how you're shaped. I used to have a boss who was a very petite, slender woman and she was awesome and commanded a lot of respect. The rest of us towered over her but hung on her ever word. As for being mistaken for being younger - I'm pretty squarely average in height and build and I still get mistaken for being 5 or more years younger than I am, so having a different body may not make any difference in that regard.
