Yeah, I thought it was based on the old school glee clubs. And probably the most original thing a glee club would ever sing, is the school song.

If it was a like, a group of kids who made a band(like in the Jem and the holograms cartoon, not a school marching band) or something like that I could see wanting original songs, but a choir/glee club is pretty much a big karaoke group.

It's basically based on show choirs. I have a friend who used to be part of one (asa hobby, not through school) and it was really about signing popular songs/musicals. On a really high level, but still.

That's how our school choir used to be. We'd have dinner theaters, travel, do musicals. That's why I really don't get the "they need to write their own songs." thing. That's like telling a school marching band it needs to compose its own symphony.

Or a high school drama class that they have to write their own scripts.

I mean, we did that anyway, but we never actually performed them (thankfully) because they were crap. Although, not as crap as Glee. (I'm a gleek and I watch the show every week, so I get to say it sucks.)
