All it takes is for one person to hear a song for free when he had no intention of hearing it at all, and then buy a tee-shirt, and that's revenue the artist would never have ever had, courtesy of 'piracy'.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Which, as stated, was endorsement by the artists themselves, stating why they are happy for tape trading and downloading of their work. Again, read the paragraph's opening sentence.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what? Are the artists themselves not allowed to give away their music for free because it upsets you? Because ayrt was referring to musicians who encourage people to pirate their music.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because those people are only going to pirate music from the artists who give their permission, and not like, everyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Way to speak for everyone who has ever downloaded anything, dude.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So you don't believe that artists should give their music away for free because it will encourage people to pirate songs from other musicians?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the artists figured, what the hell, people are going to steal it anyway so we might as well be cool about it and maybe that'll earn us points.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is kind of the whole point. People are going to steal it anyway. And if an artist can gain a couple of legitimate purchases from people who would otherwise have no intention of spending any money at all, how is that anything other than a win?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
More like "We're not going to make money off this, so we might as well look like the cool guys instead of those douchebags from Metallica."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Which seems perfectly reasonable, given that, as you said, they're not going to make money off it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Good god you're dense and I'm tired of talking in circles. Go pat yourself on the back or whatever you feel you need to do.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw. Run away anon who thinks that everyone should do things the way that you want them to. Have fun in your magical land where everyone does what you want them to do.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
DA: Are you an idiot? They're giving it away for free because people are pirating it regardless of they do. If people didn't pirate their music, they would probably charge for it.

Your argument is ridiculous. "Welp, people keep breaking into your house, so you should stop bothering to lock the doors because they're going to do it anyway." No, people should stop fucking breaking into my house.

God. The point:

You.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's not the reason all artists do that, though. Some do it because they value the revenue they receive from other sources as a result of exposure over the revenue they receive from album sales.

The question is: why is that a bad thing?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen, that's not the impetus. Artists typically give music away for free because exposure (which ultimately leads to tickets sales) is worth more to them than the very little they'd receive from album sales. Also, some give it away for free because they feel they've earned enough and no longer care.

What I'm getting at is that you seem to have a problem with this model. If the creator of a piece wants to distribute it for free, then isn't that their right?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You cannot deny that it leads to people thinking "Why pay for this when I can get it free?" about most everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that an action potentially leads to some people agreeing with something with which one disagrees is not sufficient reason to not do it.

This entire discussion revolves around artists receiving proper recompense for their art. Why should the definition of "proper recompense" not lie with the artist? If an artist doesn't feel that s/he should be paid for some particular creative act, then there shouldn't be anything wrong with that -- just as there shouldn't be anything wrong with another artist feeling that s/he should be paid for the same act. The "impression" that some people will get is immaterial. It's the artist's work, and they can do with it as they please.
