I know what you mean. I fucking love Tamora Pierce book and for one reason: as many and AS VARIED female characters as men. It's really more equality of number and variety than it is a female protagonist for me, but she had that too.

Now that I reread stuff, yeah, some of her earlier stuff isn't the best quality. Yeah, Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen asked me to suspend my belief a little too much and was vaguely offensive with the "white girl swoops in and saves all the brown people" narrative.

But my Circle of Magic books will forever be reread. I fucking love the friendship and the reversal of the Smurfette principal and fuck yeah women.

I was going to point out Achilles and Patroclus weren't actually related, then realized that's probably Hector and Paris?

Eh, anyway. Ancient Greeks. If everyone involved is a consenting adult and thinks everyone else involved has more than the brain of a cow, your ship is doing better than a lot of the actual Ancient Greeks, to say nothing of the myths.

That is Hector and Paris, right? Because if it's Agamemnon and Menelaus, I think even Menelaus might deserve better than that.

Any author who's doing that and not getting paid is pandering. Any author who is doing it and getting paid (paid can mean in art or fic trade or something, I'm not implying it's usually not cash for writing) traded their dignity somewhere down the line.
