What do think of this?

First of all, why is this on funnyjunk, of all places (I first saw it on tumblr, btw)?

I don't think slut-shaming Amanda Todd is okay, but they do have a point; if she was black nobody would've even cared about this.

I think it's a thorny issue.

I've always been bothered by how some people get recognition and others don't, and the media plays a huge part of it.
For example, Amanda was mentioned on the newspaper where I live (South America) with many other articles about online harassing and the like, but Shania's story wasn't covered at all that I saw of, so of course something being more widespread gets more people interested/liking the RIP page on Facebook.

And I also feel that people are glorifying Amanda's story making it like a poster child for teen suicide and while it's great to have more people concerned about this stuff, it's also kind of weird.

I'm really disgusted with people slut-shaming Amanda.

Your link shows a lot of things, but I think I've seen the pic you're talking about.

I don't really like it. Yes, they have a point - people care a lot about bad things that happen to white people and pretty much none to bad things that happen to black people, and that sucks. I just think they could have done it without the slut-shaming and basically trying to make Amanda Todd look like a bad person by comparison.

Also, most of the attention Amanda Todd's death is getting isn't just because she died, but because she committed suicide after being bullied, and bullying is kind of a hot topic lately. Shania's killer was a pedophile/rapist, not a school bully, and he's been arrested.

I've seen people put so much hate on Todd for getting more attention than other people and it's just so ughhhh no.

I definitely don't like the shaming, but I see the other side - we know very well that America doesn't care about black people who are missing. It's a shame what happened to both of these young ladies

While there's definitely a race issue at play, the crimes are very different. Both horrible, but different.

One died in a terrible way. Sad and horrifying, but with very few exceptions, people forget about it eventually unless they personally knew the victim.

The other was blackmailed and harassed, and--most importantly--still alive to respond. An issue that would have been pushed to the back burner eventually was dug up again and again, which is a lot of the reason it's more widely known.

Also? Fuck this picture. The fact that we're even comparing the two (and seriously, the language in the Amanda Todd one is disgusting) like some sort of bizarro competition is revolting. Horrible things happen to women of all races.

Eh, very different cases imo. Both are tragic, wtf is wrong with people blah blah blah... but like others have said, bullying has been a hot topic lately. A lot of people also say 'people only care because she was so pretty' but is that true? The video she'd made was so depressing I wasn't even paying attention to her looks, but that's just me.

I also live in the city where Amanda Todd last went to school, so it's easy to forget it's actually made news worldwide, and not just around my area.

It's so fucking weird to be seeing my name (Amanda Todd) all over the news and fandom places.

I've never heard of either of these girls. Both of their stories are equally sad. But, how do we know the "likes" are the ones that are actually on their facebook pages? It's very easy to make this seem like something it isn't. If it's true though, then this country has more problems than I thought it did. Amanda obviously had sexual and self-esteem issues, and Shania was not given the acknowledgement she deserved for her hard work and terrible attack.

If you look up their names on FB you can it for yourself.

I don't agree with the language, but it's true that victims of color are ignored and while white victims usually get lingering attention from the media.
