Yeah. Sex is still hard to write (and quite likely very controversial)
(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)Also, the impetus for the sexy times is that he was spied on a date with his (closeted to everyone else) genderqueer wife by someone who thought he was out with a man and has just been confronted about it. And while I think it all ultimately goes places that are good, you can see why that might cause some internet wank that I don't particularly want.

"Honey, can't you wait until we have it Scotchguarded? Oh, not the cushions. It's so gross when sit down on them and they crunch like crackers."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)As for writing smut, here is my foolproof method (that probably only works for me, so):
1) Really get a good grasp on what's going to happen in the scene. It should play like a movie in your head, so you can picture where everything's going and what everyone's doing and in what order it'll all go down. [It seems like you're at this stage in the process? So hooray!]
2) Write down the basic stuff, in one sitting if possible; and I do mean basic, like at the "tab a into slot b, no attempt to be sexy" level. Just descriptive, and just so you have all the basic motions/actions down and won't forget them later.
3) Back off from it for a little bit. Maybe a day? Enough to let it/yourself breathe, etc.
4) Read it over, see where you are; sometimes you'll look back at things and descriptions you didn't think were sexy at the time (when you were being very clinical and trying to precisely convey what was going on) and realize that just the description of sexy actions can be sexy. [How true this is depends on the writer/reader, obviously].
5) If it's still not at the level you aspire to, now's the time to think of ~sexy turns of phrase. Usually for me this means adding more "how it felt" vs "here's what happened"? IDK.
6) Do whatever proofreading stuff you normal do, get it beta read if that's what you want, etc. Tip: make sure people don't have one hand on X, one hand on Y, and the other hand on Z.
7) Give it one more good read, with the eyes of someone who's never read it before (not easy; usually by this step of the process I am so bored of whatever it is), and make sure it all makes sense. And then voila! You are ready to post your smut.
