Hugs. Have you read the books, by the way? They're awesome, too. And there's also an obscure adaptation with Richardson, although I cannot say that it was a particular success. Still good, however.

Livanov is adorable (especially his voice). Although I think there's a strong comedy/mythic element in Russian adaptation.

obscure adaptation with Richardson ? Is it the one with another actor as ACD, sometimes considered the prequel to Murder Rooms? I think it was called something like Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle? If that's one, I have seen it. If not, I'm interested to know more so I can see it!

I thought Brett!Holmes was the funniest adaptation. Some of the stuff he said that wasn't in the canon just killed me. The stories will always be my true love but the entire Granadaverse is so well done that I rarely notice deviations from canon. The Russian Holmes was good, but like you say, the comedic and mythic elements are there. I got the impression they were trying to be funny at times and it fell short whereas Brett's Holmes was effortlessly amusing, like when he'd tell Mrs. Hudson that she was hideously in the way or when Watson would read to him from the paper and he'd make little remarks. It was infrequent enough that it never detracted from the story.

No, that's not that one. The one you mentioned is actually a Murder Rooms pilot, "The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes", and I do not really separate it from the series. I just consider Laing to be playing a younger version of Edwards!Doyle.

The adaptation I was talking about was "The Sign of Four". "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is also there, but the copy of the latter it is almost impossible to obtain. Starring young Ian Richardson, the actor who played Bell throughout the entire MR series.

I have got to find that! Well, preferably I can find both eventually, but I'm definitely tracking down Sign of Four right away. Thank you!!!!

Have you read Conan Doyle, Detective? It's not terribly well written, but it's fascinating and is a great starting point for learning about that aspect of his life.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, no that one. Thanks for the rec. I do have an awful lot of books which I'm planning to read, but maybe I can place it somewhere after the Hornblower series)

I know that ACD participated in forensic work and helped to solve/solved a couple of cases, but I didn't really read anything expanded on the matter. The last Doylean thing I've read was concentrated on Joe Bell, the book by Ely Liebow, "Joe Bell: a Model for Sherlock Holmes".

Oh, I'm glad it interests you.

There's no possibility, however, of you knowing any Murder Rooms fanfics/writing them yourself? That would be an awesome thing(

It never occurred to me to look for fic before now, so I have no idea of the quality, but there are four stories on AO3:

And now I need to read them and then go find more. I wish I could make my muse write what I want but I can't, so I doubt I'll ever write MR fic :(

There's also a section on FF.net. Didn't read those yet either) But s o m e t h i n g t e l l s m e that it's quite hopeless to look for more unless you know some specific places (eg somebody's LJ). Murder Rooms is just this thing which has no fandom and, probably, only two or three fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah :/ There's one fan showing up in the Tumblr tags with a lots of gifsets and that's it. I can't think of anyone on LJ. I've tried to get some of my friends into it over the years, but haven't had any luck. It's a shame, especially because some of them have written very good Holmes stories in the past. No one I know writes anything related to Sherlock or Doyle anymore because the BBC show took over the fandom just when the RDJ-verse fans had lost interest and wandered off. I wish more Sherlockians (in the purist sense) had gotten into MR. I got into it a little late but I'd rather look back at stuff preserved in a fandom that's gone quiet than no fandom at all.

Yes, I totally agree about Brett. But I can't, unfortunately, watch his last episodes, it's way too painful to see him in this state. And he doesn't make perfect Holmes like this either.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I can't watch them, either. When I see anything from those episodes, I don't see Holmes at all but instead a very sick man who's life is about to come to a tragically early end. It breaks my heart to see him look like that. I think I'd rather they had cancelled the series than go on with him so sick and suffering so drastically from his medication.

I'm a huge Brett fan but, honestly, his very heavy smoking habit really, really didn't help his heart. Wasn't just the meds.
