Anybody know anything about Word??

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-10-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have Word 2002. It's what i write in. All my fic were written in this (and the older ones in Word 98 or whatever).

Here's my issue. I'm trying to repost some old stuff, so it's up on AO3 and more accessible. I'm tidying up my original word .docs, and they are all - read only. I did *not* choose to make them read only. When i try to turn 'read only' off, the little boxes that say 'read only' ARE NOT CHECKED.

But they're still 'read only' and won't let me save any of my edits. I have *no clue* how they got set as read only, and cannot figure out how to turn it off when there are no little checks to undo.

Help?

No clue how that happened, and my only suggestion is to highlight everything and do a copy/paste into new files.

I was so hoping to not have to do that and make *more* files and ...gah. So many files. But it looks like i'll have to do something like.

I have no real suggestions (anything that I could suggest would just be from me Googling around).

Just want to suggest moving over to Open Office if you're worried about price for upgrading Word. It's a great office package, IMO, and it's free and open-source.

I've used Word forever and my new stuff isn't 'read only'. I'm frustrated that these old files are and baffled as to how it happened. I don't really want to try and move everything over to a new system, but i'll look at OO and see if i like it.

This might be a version thing if you're running Word '02 on Windows 7 or another newer operating system.

I don't know how to fix it. :/ I suggest you copy-paste the docs into Word Pad or Open Office and save them as new .rtf files, though Open Office will let you do .docs. That way, formatting will be preserved.

Good luck saving your fics!

If it is a 'version' thing, i am *not surprised*. Word is hinky, Windows can be hinky, every new update/upgrade seems to tweak everything just a hair out of line so older stuff keeps falling off the 'you can still use this' list.

Very frustrating.

Thanks! :)

Try google docs for a free alternative that you can access anywhere you have internet.

In addition, you might want to try uploading your files into gdocs (it'll convert them into a usable format), and seeing if that allows you to edit.

As for why it did that, all I can think of is did you change computers? Because Word often does that if it thinks you aren't the original owner of your document.

To fix in Word, usually you can "Save As" and make a new copy that is editable.

I do have some stuff on google.docs, but when i dl to save to my harddrive, they're saving as a docx, which won't open in Word, which really pisses me off. Is there a way to save them as something *other* than docx? I don't see an option on google.docs anywhere.

I've changed computers twice since this stuff was 'final' - i always use the same name on my computer and i have the serial number for the Word disc, so i'm installing it with the same numbers and such every time. These seem to be the only files that got flipped to read only. What's frustrating is that there's nothing *checked* as read only, so i can't uncheck/turn off. Which is baffling.

Now, how weird, i did the 'save as' about three times when i first started messing with all this, putting the 'new' file in a different place and a new name, and every time it told me the file was read only and i couldn't do that and blah.

Just now? It saved it as a new file. Of course. WTH, Word.

When I right-click on a title (within the list) on gdocs it gives me download options including rtf and plain text, no matter what the original file type.

Ah, okay, i've been dl'ing directly from the .doc, not the list itself. I'll give it a try, thanks. :)

I had that happen to me when I moved all my documents from a PC to a Mac a zillion years ago, and I had to change the read-only setting at the folder level rather than the document level. I have no idea why. But maybe see if you can try that?

By this do you mean - you go to the .doc file, right-click and choose 'properties', and change it there?

I have looked all through my options there, and the 'read only' box is unchecked, and i have 'full control' and all permissions. So unless i'm overlooking something - it's only noticing that i'm in 'read only' mode when i try to save something. Otherwise, it doesn't seem aware of it.

Sorry, I don't mean in the doc, I mean Properties in the folder where the doc is stored. I know on my Mac I ctrl+click/right-click on the folder, and hit Get Info, and then check that the box that says "Locked" is unchecked, and my user profile has read and write access on the folder. But I have no idea what the steps to do that on a PC would be, so IDK if that's helpful.

ARRGH.
I thought you'd fixed it for me. I right-clicked the file with all the individual fic-files and choose 'properties' and there was the 'read only', checked! So i unchecked and said 'apply' and it said 'for everything?' and i'm all yes yes yes!

And then i clicked okay, and closed it, and opened it again and checked 'properties' and...read only was checked all over again. It's like it did it and then reset it the second it was done. WTH.

I shall have to poke at this. It might be a solution if i can make it leave it unchecked. Thanks!
