I've been giving supernatural the widest berth possible for years but I just want to chime in and say that Blue Exorcist is basically perfect in every way

Interesting concept in this secret. Never been interested in Supernatural though so I didn't catch on to any similarities.

Although... I might be thinking too much into it but I've always compared Inuyasha and Twilight in the same way, particularly the relationships of the main couples. Probably because my roommate was really into Twilight when I stumbled onto IY, so any similarities were pretty fresh in my mind idk.

The way the anime ended was the way season 5 of SPN SHOULD have ended.

i enjoy both for different reasons and the series are very different indeed but i kind of have to agree, especially with the relationship part, considering the okumuras have more emotional maturity and a better grip on their issues at fifteen than the winchesters do at more than twice that age.

as for plot, ao no exorcist actually sounds like it has a semblance of a plan going for it whereas i'm pretty sure spn was supposed to end like 3 seasons ago or something, so yeah.

I feel like this is a silly comparison. Most people don't usually care enough to compare anime to live-action television, you know. Any overlap between the two different media types matters exactly none at all. :/

I don't get why being anime vs. live action is such a big deal? Narratives are narratives. There are plenty of points of comparison: a core relationship between two brothers, heavy supernatural elements, etc.

Probably because it's anime and some people like to act pretty elitist over that.

And honestly if I'm bored enough I'll find myself comparing two different things regardless of their original media (anime or not), all you need is a few good similarities between them to draw a comparison with.

that kind of elitism drives me nuts. not even sure if it's the "animated" part of it which automatically makes people take things less seriously or the foreign media part which...idk sounds kind of ethnocentric after a while. a LOT of animated/anime series are better than existing live-action shows.

Well, they're both ethnocentric. Westerners tend to think of animated shows as being synonymous with children's shows, which isn't quite true in Japan.

This shouldn't be a secret. SPN is a pile of shit. The actors' sex appeal is the only reason it's popular, because women don't have enough shallow brain candy to schlick to and will take whatever they can get.

I thought the first couple of seasons were actually pretty interesting (because I love close sibling relationships and I REALLY like shows that have the "monster of the week" thing and the demon shit was cool at first) and then it turned into a pile of shit. I mean, I'm not saying if was ever high art or anything but it used to be better imo (the acting was still silly, but it was part of the fun!)

Agreed. I really enjoyed it up through season 3, parts of season 4 were okay. Then...all downhill. :/

I don't really find it comparable to SPN, since there's a massive season disparity which pretty much kills SPN that BE probably wouldn't have survived either if it had kept going its own way. BE wrapped up so quickly because there were less than 30 chapters of source material to go off of at the time.

Still, good series, both anime and manga. I kind of hope it gets a remake like FMA did one day, though.
