God, that comic is so shitty. I tried reading it, but it's way too maudlin.

Also, I really did not like Tom. He was kind of a giant dick.

SPOILERS in here

I started reading it early on when the drama/angst wasn't laid on as thick, but now I only keep up just to find out what happens in the end. I'm just not invested any more.

*SPOILERS SPOILERS*

Plus personally whenever I can see a child sexual abuse plotline coming in a story, part of me just goes "...oh no." I think some part of me just disapproves of fictional treatments of the subject (even though it has never been part of my life). Maybe I've just seen it played for cheap drama too many times to react any other way :\

This.

Though I liked Tom because he was a dick, so, ymmv.

But the comic as a whole is just one bit dick-sucking fest for the artist.

New comic to check out; thank you, Secret.

Yikes, have people actually said that? I sure hope if someone's said that, what they meant was "it gave me the courage to/made me realize I was" or something along those lines rather than in the "I bought these clothes because the cast of this comic wears these clothes".

So... if somebody finds the words to define what they've always felt was off about them, and that just happened to be inspired by a shitty comic... that's a problem?

Where do we draw the line, I ask you? What if they figured it out from other shitty media? What if it was watching Soapdish?

My theory is that it's an error in communication and that the OP got irked by the idea of someone saying that they "deciding to be trans" rather than someone seeing the comic and getting the courage to come out/realizing their true feelings/having a wake up call or anything else that means awakening of what was always there. You know what I mean? Stuff gets poorly worded all over the internet, especially feelings. Usually "it sounds like you're saying X, is that what you're saying?" usually clears things up (and would avoid a lot of arguments).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I think their problem wasn't with people who did "find the words," as you say, but rather with those who just thought it was "cool" or whatever. I dunno. I felt like it had a little subtext of "Tom isn't really trans," which is a whole 'nother kettle of fish, but this is the internet, so I might be completely misreading it.

Basically I don't know. I'll shut up now.

I haven't read the comic or anything, but what the secret brought to my mind was the type of fans who decide they're trans basically on a whim for fun. Sort of like the (generally young teen) otaku-kin fans, or the girls who get way into yaoi roleplaying and crossplaying with their friends.

The sort of people who "are totes Axel and Roxas reincarnated!"

I might be misunderstanding the secret maker, though. I've just seen way too many immature fans come trampling into trans* spaces over the years to not be skeptical of anyone who is "x because of this character"

You have just described more than half of the fans of that particular comic! Congrats!

Nobody is trans "because of", they just are and sometimes it takes a really weird or random source to have them realize and come to terms with that fact.

This got really long and ranty, so I deleted it all.

Something shorter:

As a transman myself, I do not like Tom, everything was so easy for him that I guess I'm more than a bit jealous (he's also being shown as a total asshole in the recent comics, which makes me dislike him even more).

I can also say that nothing 'MADE' me how I am, I was biologically born female, but I am not a woman, I am a man, and I will continue to live my life as such. While a comic is responsible for revealing that knowledge, and opening up doors of information for me (10 years ago), it did not make me trans*.
