Yeah, I agree. And I STILL think the move to DE is to blame, dammit. I'll never stop bitching about that, so whatever.

I hate to say it, even though I was for the move....I agree. But the comments on LJ were just so fucked up it was necessary.

Just all around a shitty thing, really. Its a damned if do/damned if don't situation. :/

I'm still on LJ and...would you possibly mind reminding me what was wrong with the comments again because I can't seem to remember the arguments! (no, seriously...I need to remember because maybe LJ is being crappy in a special sort of way that I don't even notice anymore these days. Few of the changes bother me so I definitely need to get second opinions to know what to look for. ^^)

Uh, since I never used my layout for F!S (it was wonky and squished, no matter how many times i fiddled with it -_-), I used the normal comm layout. Basically, the comments lost the subject line, so you couldn't see warning or what not. and then we had the whole thing where comment threads were squished and you had a little ticker thing below them that said "so many new comments were added since" and you had to expand that ON TOP of expanding comments and it was just annoying and bah. Cause you could lose what comment threads were what under a secret and go "Was this the one that got wanky? Or is this one a different comment?"

Or at least, that's what I remember anyway.

Also, the new comment layout thing messed with people who were using mobile platforms. I have no idea if that ever got fixed or not.

edit: OH. And the new icon chooser thing. It'd slow down people's computers who didn't have a strong video card or something and it'd switch icons around and ugh. I liked the drop down text menu and it didn't slow things down.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I can understand that then. I don't have Internet on my phone so I never got to go online from any other place than my computer.

I suppose I'm lucky enough to have a somewhat cooperating computer to work with. xD

P.S: LJ still looks good though. I've seen the future hopes the Russian owners have for it and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, YOU THINK IT LOOKS BAD NOW?

You're welcome.

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK AM I EVEN LOOKING AT?!

HOW IS THAT USEFUL?!?!?

YOU CAN STOP FEELING REGRETFUL THAT F!S PULLED BACK FROM LJ NOW, Y/Y?

IT IS NOT USEFUL. UNLESS USEFUL TRANSLATES TO US ALL PACKING AND MOVING EVERYTHING TO DW.

BECAUSE IT'S RUSSIA!

D>

I know. It's painful to even try to sort through this one page. I don't know where anything is anymore.

If this is how LJ will start looking - God, let it be a joke though - we'll be permanently moving here pretty soon and F!S will spring back to life in no time. >

W...What the hell? Is that the comments or the notifs on the side? O_o I may just be being slow here but...that just looks confusing and icky >

I think that the sidebar has...friend updates? I think that they're trying to make LJ into some sort of social platform like Facebook or something and thus the, err, format.
It does look icky. ;_____;

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thread loading times, for one. LJ doesn't play happy with my phone or with my laptop. It's not bad if a page has only a hundred comments but there's a noticeable drag beyond that. There was also the whitespace-inducing migraine issue that LJ still hasn't fixed.

And no subject lines. I can't imagine the general comments without subject lines. Case said he couldn't use the custom that displayed subject lines because of other problems with the alternate layout and that was why he stuck with the default layout. But with the way the default layout collapses comments, he couldn't mod properly.

Anyway, things I remember off the top of my head.

It wouldn't load at all for some. For others they only got some comments. Most people never got comment notifications. LJ would go down just 'cause. And there are more but these are off the top of my head.

Still, I strangely miss LJ. I would love to be able to post videos again.

And on some computers, you literally cannot click the Post Comment button. Like, it'd stay persistently greyed out. My new computer actually can click them now, but my old one couldn't, you can't use style=mine without a paid, and anything using the default comment page immediately became inaccessible for me. I've seen others who had the same problem, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It was like this since before the move. So, whatever.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You're really, really never going to let this go, are you? Why does this dig so deeply for you that you can't move on? I'm honestly curious, not trying to criticize ATM.

I suspect the increasing popularity of tumblr has more do with the decline in activity than the move to DW. (Though I don't doubt that a sizable amount of regulars were lost in the move, too.) It feels like fandom related stuff on LJ has been in decline since mid-2011, at least.

I would almost say it's been in decline since 2007, since the purges. We're just finally beginning to notice it now. Which is sad.
