I don't really see Derek being friends with anyone. He's kind of a dick and emotionally stunted, so if he can't push someone around to do his bidding, he has no use for them.

Uh.... I don't think we're watching the same show? Derek has some serious issues, sure, and I'm in no way excusing some of the things he's done, but he also has a tendency to throw himself in the line of fire to protect Scott or Stiles. I don't see how that fits with your theory of having no use for them if he can't push them around.

DA. Agree with this. He doesn't desperately need Scott, and he certainly doesn't need Stiles at all, but he always protects them. He has severe emotional problems that make actual human connection a difficult thing for him, but it's not like it's impossible.

So far Derek has mainly tried to get Scott to join his pack, not to be his friend. And his attitude towards his pack isn't all that buddy-buddy either, more like military troops.

I didn't say he'd tried to be Scott's friend. Just that he'd saved his life a few times when there wasn't anything in it for him except an ungrateful teenager.

and he's a guy thrust into a leadership role that he has absolutely no idea how to handle. and considering the only times we've seen him with his pack is during a time when he has a bunch of hunters looking for his head and a monster on the loose, training the newbies is probably a good idea, even if his methods seemed very "he saw this in a movie it'll totally work".

I agree that Derek was definitely under a lot of stress last season, but you have to keep in mind that he purposefully sought out emotionally vulnerable teenagers to turn because he knew they'd be more likely to say yes, which is pretty manipulative and shitty. Yeah, he might have explained what was going on with the hunters to them and some of the risks, but he didn't tell them about the alpha pack, which is a pretty big deal. I don't think Derek is a bad guy at heart, honestly, but he's a pretty shitty leader.

yeah, the point of my comment was that he's a shitty leader, but he's trying, even if he mostly gets it wrong. and since i don't recall it being implied he knew about the alpha pack at that time, i don't know if he should be blamed for that.

It's been awhile since I watched the finale, so I might be misremembering about the alpha pack. I was thinking it was implied that they'd left their calling card on the Hale house awhile back, but that could have been well after he turned everyone. (And the show timeline is so out of whack half the time anyway, who knows. Lol.)

I don't think so.. ? Derek was at the house again in 2x10 when he woke up after being used to resurrect Peter, and I don't recall there being anything like that there. I mean, I figure even if the Alpha pack had shown up then Derek would smell them. It's implied that the finale is the first time anybody noticed it, and I always thought that Derek either a) didn't know about them in the first place, or b) did know but completely forgot in the whirlwind of drama and near death experiences.

That might be why they chose to bring Peter back, he's the one who can fill Derek in with ~alpha knowledge~ but trusting him is clearly a bad idea so there can be tension and hopefully some things explained at the same time.

Ahh, good point! Like I said, it's been awhile since I've watched the episode, so it's likely just dodgy memory coming into play. Especially since I spent most of that episode worried that they were going to kill off Jackson.

Really interested to see where they take things with Peter, ngl. Especially since it's pretty well a given that he's going to do shady, shady things. (I love Peter and his sass, but I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. Derek, you should listen to Deaton on this.)

Yeah, I mean, information is power, and Peter has that laptop and his brain, which is probably way more information than either Deaton or Chris Argent would ever give Derek. Hell, there's probably a lot of stuff Peter knows that I want to know, but we'll be forever waffling about whether it's the truth or not.

Don't get me wrong, I think Derek has done a lot of shitty things. But occasionally he does the right thing... or he tries to do the right thing but the right thing isn't what he thinks it is. (ex. trying to kill lydia) He's not the sharpest crayon in the box.

I'd say he more just doesn't know how to deal with other people, than actually disliking them and never wanting friends ever. Hell I think his reason for going after a pack is more about needing a family again than just needing people to fight for him. Even if withheld information and is a dick about it.

I think Derek wants to do the right thing and protect others. He may talk big, but when it comes down to it he does want to keep others safe--he's just really, really emotionally stunted and kind of horrible at human interaction.

However, I do think he actually needed Scott around. In season one, Scott was his best shot at tracking down the alpha. He also couldn't defeat the alpha alone and needed Scott around for that. Stiles is Scott's best friend, and protecting Stiles could be seen as keeping Scott happy. In season 2, he wanted Scott to join his pack. I don't think Derek's a dick and those were the only or even the main reasons he's helped Scott or Stiles, but it wasn't completely selfless.

... that's what i meant. i would hope that some of his many issues would be worked on so he COULD start to trust people and maybe even be friends with them.
