First line?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
(Accidentally made this a new thread. Oops. Let's hope it works this time.)

Hey, F!S, what's the first line of the last piece of media you consumed and liked?

Not, like, your favorite of all time, I'm talking the dumb youtube video that made you laugh five minutes before you checked this comm. The book you read yesterday, that was okay as fluff. The movie your English teacher recommended, because if you're not going to read the book you might as well get something out of it, and you ended up liking it anyway. The newspaper article or blog post that was absolutely captivating.

What's the first line?

(You can say what work it is, or not. If not, let's make it a guessing game!)

Mine is, "'This is the holiest time,' James whispered. 'This is the time of longest Light.'"

Reading Sacrifices arc, then? That's book 5, right? (Wind that Shakes the Seas and Stars, I think.)

Mine's, "For eight days, [character] thought she could relax."

Omitting character name because it's a spoiler from the previous book, but I will say that I'm rereading one of my favourite books. (Warrior and Witch, by Marie Brennan. I should just plug that series all over the place. I'm on the second one, which was originally titled Warrior and Witch but has been retitled to Witch in subsequent prints. Confusing!)

(OP) Nope, it's Freedom and Not Peace (four). I'm re-reading it, although really I was re-reading the third one because it has all those awesome displays of power and not a whole lot of the angst and drama and backsliding, but then I got caught up and couldn't stop.

(And thanks for the new series to read!)

"You don't mess about do you? She's keen!"

From the live broadcast of Emmerdale this evening. Really enjoyed it, ridiculous as it was. I love me my soap operas.

When she was growing up on a farm in the central highlands of Kenya, Wangari Maathai says, the earth was still wrapped in her green dress.
(retranslated, so it may not be quite exact, sorry)

From "Planting the Trees of Kenya. The Story of Wangari Maathai" by Claire A. Nivola. I think it's been way too long since I read a children's picture book (yay, nostalgia). And the pics in this one are beautiful!

Walking is agony, the crunch and drag of glass against skin and bone is constant, the sharp pain of nerves severed and regrown, over and over.

"They're all dead now."
From Fall on your knees by Anne Marie Macdonald. Also the saddest book I have ever read.
Guess that'll teach me to expect happiness from Canadian literature.

I can't think of any adult Canadian books that aren't sad or glum either. You might be on to something.

Douglas Coupland writes geeky humor novels.
JPod remains one of my favorites. Canada even had a TV show for it.

According to Multiverse Theory, you, in an infinite number of universes, right now, are fucking Rick Santorum.
