Birth control discussion (again): The Patch?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yesterday everyone was talking about the Pill. I'm thinking about the Patch, since I'm sure I'm too forgetful for the Pill, and won't be able to take it every day on time.

Basically: Patch Y/N? Thoughts? Experiences?

I still vote for the ring. The patch has weight limitations, which is why it wouldn't work for me. I was right at the upper threshold of the weight range when I considered taking it, and so I chose the ring for that reason. My sister-in-law used the patch for years and loved it.

Been on it for 7 years. No problems. I wear it on my belly and the only issue I've ever had is the adhesive sticking to my undies on the first day, and tending to leave a sort of "ring" around the patch. (Which I don't care about at all.) Never been on the Pill, but AIUI, the patch is pretty much the same in terms of hormones and side effects. (So the same caveats apply: avoid smoking, increased risk of clotting, etc.) Never had any problems with it falling off or even coming unstuck. Super easy to remember, especially since if you don't remember the morning of your patch change day, you can change it later and it doesn't really matter. (Plus, on all weeks except your "off" week, you have the physical patch to remind you - although first patch of the month is the most important.)

AFAIK (this was true when I started and I haven't looked into it since) there's only one brand, so if you have to change your dosage for some reason (increasing progesterin, for instance) then the patch wouldn't be an option. It also wasn't covered by my insurance plan when I started, but that's changed and I think most plans cover it now. I was paying about $20/ month.

"you can change it later" should read "you can change it later that day." The insert tells you what to do if you miss a patch, and whether you will require backup contraception that week or not. IIRC, if you're within 24 hours, you're safe.

I've never been on patch birth control but I have been on patch medication before. It was about 12-13 years ago, so maybe the adhesives are different now or are better with different medications but I hated it. I wore it several places but mostly on my ribcage/side and it was such a pain. If I did anything remotely strenuous and sweated it would start peeling off. Swimming and showers only exacerbated it. Then when the adhesive sucked too much you had to put these giant stickers over it to keep it stuck to you until you could change patches. I've never had problems taking pills on a regular basis, so for me patches were more trouble and aggravation than they were worth.

Have you tried creating a routine where you either take the pill when you brush your teeth or setting a daily alarm on your phone?

Well, the Patch was one of the forms of BC that made me suicidal, not to mention perpetually, violently ill. That's a pretty rare reaction to it, though, from what I understand. Most women have a pretty positive experience with it, so I'd say at least talk to your doctor about it. The Patch may be just the right fit for you.

Belated but the patch has higher doses of hormones than other options like the IUD, ring, or implant. Higher dose usually means more side effects so it would not personally be my first choice. I have had really good luck with the ring, myself.
