Character is really another fandom's character?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
What do you guys think about fics where a character is really a character from another fandom? For instance, I've seen a lot of Stargate Atlantis fic, where people decide John Sheppard is really Harry Potter. Or, right now I've just been besotted with an idea where Kevin Ryan (because my brain is apparently all Castle all the time now) is actually John Connor.

Stupid idea? Or worth exploring? (Somebody explore it with me here...pleeeeease, maybe I just need to talk it out.)

There'd have to be a really convincing reason to make it work, I think. Using the Harry Potter example...why would Harry abandon all the friends to go be a fake American and THEN choose to fight with a foreign country's military? That makes no sense to me.

But what's your Ryan-is-John rationale?

Well, I pretty much ignore everything that happened after T2 (or at least, not necessarily treat it as definite canon) -- which is to say JOHN IS 11. Not the 13 that T3 and TSCC tried to retcon him into being. There is ONSCREEN EVIDENCE that he is 11 years old (actually, I think it may be 10, but I know it's not 13, and I'm done with that rant now, sorry.)

Anyway, so Dyson's dead, Cyberdine's blown up and Sarah and John are on the run. After a couple years of running all the time -- even when they feel safe -- John's tired of it all. He wants a normal life, and right about the time Sarah starts getting sick with the cancer that all the post T2 incarnations insist she has, the law catches up to them. Realizing there's nothing left that she can teach John, and that she probably doesn't have long anyway, she tells him to run as far as he can, as fast as he can, and live whatever life he wants. Because all she can give him now is time for an escape.

So he gets away, and she's back in the mental institution, having decided that crazy is the way to play it. So, John, maybe 13 or 14 makes his way to New York, where he ends up busted for something stupid like a fight (where of course he was on the right, defending someone) or stealing something (like food or a pair of shoes to replace his falling apart ones).

When they try to find out who he is, he picks the name Kevin out of thin air and says he doesn't have a last name. He's lived on the street his whole life and never knew his parents. And because, in reality, you don't send the fingerprints of every child who comes across your desk to a national database just in case they might be wanted fugitives, this gets him by.

He has a plan for escaping, but what he doesn't count on is a nice cop and an excellent caseworker who get the charges against him dropped and set him up with a foster family -- The Ryans. They take him in, and even though he's still originally planning to leave, he eventually becomes a part of their family and ends up taking their name, thus creating "Kevin Ryan." But it's not all an act. He really does like them, maybe even come to love them, and with their influence and that of the cop who helped him in the first place, he decides that's what he wants to do.

And even though he never *really* forgets, he's almost able to put everything that happened before behind him.

Until one day, he's working a case in the Castle-verse, and there's a commotion in the bullpen. Turns out there's some lady downstairs demanding to see her son and holding an officer hostage. So, of course, everyone converges, with Team Castle coming up on the situation from the side, and a whole host of cops from the front, facing off with, you guessed it, Sarah Connor, who lived thanks to some experimental therapy and then went into remission (and before anyone says it's not possible, I'd like to introduce you to my grandmother) and then escaped again and has been looking for John.

But right now, she's got a cop in a headlock with a gun to his head.

John/Kevin calls to her, and she turns to look at him, momentarily relaxing her grip on the officer, who breaks her hold. The order is given to take her out, but he yells no, and tries to push her out of the way. She still gets shot a little bit, and I can't decide if she should die, but she tells him he needs to run, because there's a Terminator in time, and it's looking for him.

I haven't quite decided how the rest of the Castle verse fits in from that point forward, but that's how I get there. What do you think?

Wow, that really is an interesting concept. I'd caution though that if you keep John 10 or 11 in T2, it's going to make Ryan awfully young in Castle.

I've seen so many with Harry Potter in particular that it makes me want to throw the computer across the room.

Just the Harry Potter incarnation makes you rage, or the concept in general? I typed up a synopsis upthread in a reply to [personal profile] leisuretime if you might be interested in taking a look? :)

I'm not a huge fan, but the one exception I make is when it's the same actor who played the other character. I still get antsy if it doesn't make a lot of sense and isn't somehow explained, but I still get a kick out of those when they're well done.

Thanks for the reply! I typed up a kinda lengthy synopsis upthread in a reply to [personal profile] leisuretime, if it interests you. Though, sadly, the actor is not the same. But we're talking about someone who was a kid in one 'verse and is an adult in the other.

I crackily headcanon this all the time wrt shared actors.

Like, when I was in the How I Met Your Mother fandom, the fact that HIMYM was basically "The Whedonverse Reunion Show" from the sheer number of actors from Joss Whedon productions that guest starred in it (including THREE of the main characters as of this summer), me and my fandom friends were always inventing headcanons about how Wesley totally came back to life and is pretending to be Sandy Rivers, and how Robin was leading a double life all along and is totally a SHIELD agent who accidentally started liking the people she was pretending to be friends with, and Lily never came back from San Fransisco and it's been Willow Rosenberg impersonating her all along because she wanted a normal life, and Barney actually used to be a supervillain who faced off against a badly-concussed amnesiac Mal Reynolds.

LOL, that's an awesome headcanon!

I kind of like these types of fic (I love fusions and very much like crossovers). I especially like it if there isn't much backstory for the character. This works well with Inception characters (Eames is Calvin form Calvin and Hobbes, Arthur is Pubert Addams). I have fanciful little thoughts about using characters from The Goonies or The Monster Squad. Maybe Dana from True Lies changed her name and joined SHIELD. Maybe Bastian from Neverending Story grew up to work for the CIA in Covert Affairs. I say go for it.
