There are very, very few people I know whom I would be comfortable with them knowing where I live, so that's hardly a measure for me.

Well lying to people is obviously easier when you don't have to face them, I give you that. Maybe everyone complaining how they have to fake enthusiasm for their friends' fandoms really only mean "fake enthusiasm online"?
Then again, shouldn't it be easier to grow a spine online and just speak up too? It seems an awful world to live in when you never know if your "friends" really share your love for something or just think it's too much of a hassle to tell you the truth.

Then again, shouldn't it be easier to grow a spine online and just speak up too?

The few times I've done that, I was called a troll and dumped as a friend. I've since learned to keep my mouth shut.

It seems an awful world to live in when you never know if your "friends" really share your love for something or just think it's too much of a hassle to tell you the truth.

That's the risk you take when you make friends based on fandoms. I just find it easier most of the time to pretend than to deal with the fallout of being honest. Especially about something as petty as fandom.

I still don't get it, but as I said, we seem to different definitions of what friends are.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
...how and why the fuck do you only have friends based on fandom?

I have been in a number of fandoms over the years. Out of my real life friends, only four of them have been interested in the media off of which my fandoms were spawned, and only one of them has actually been active in fandom. That one, by the way, didn't and wouldn't give a shit if I felt differently about the particularly media we both enjoyed.

You need to seek out better compadres, and perhaps consider making friends offline.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Because of where I live and certain factors about myself, making friends offline really isn't an option. Shallow online friendships may be annoying at times, but they're a lot safer for me than being close to anybody offline.

Somehow, this is incredibly creepy.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
How is it creepy?

I'd have gone with depressing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
What. I feel very sad for them :(

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* When certain things about you are anathema to the people you have to face every day, you learn to lie in order to fit in and avoid anything beyond casual acquaintance so no one discovers how different you really are. It's called "not getting killed."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yet you and I both know that it's easier on the internet to find people who are more accepting. I think you're creating a false dilemma with this "get close to people in real life and get killed for my deep dark secret OR have shitty online friendships based on literally nothing but anime and lies" choice you're presenting.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever works. Shitty online friendships are better than nothing. I'll take what I can get at this point.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
well,

when you get out of high school, you'll discover that you weren't near the anathema to people you think you are.

DA

Try being LBGT and living in a small town in Texas where Bible-humping is the community sport. Then we'll talk. Until then, quit being a dismissive asshole to someone who already has issues.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh. Online friendships don't have to be shallow and based entirely on fandom. WTF.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not, but I'm very uncomfortable with friendships as it is (because Reasons). The shallower the better. It may get annoying at times, but I find it far less threatening than the alternative.
