Young adulthood status recs?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-10-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
In the past few days, I've been sort of doing my own informal research on how mass media treats young adults and their adulthood status.

Could you guys give me some recommendations about shows or movies or anything that deals with young adults and how society treats their move to adulthood? Anything from starting new jobs, social life, not having either of those.

Particularly if you have any recommendations when that adulthood status is on hold or ignored, like if the young adult is injured/sick and needs to be taken care of, loses own home/job, anything like that.

The one that really comes to mind is Reality Bites and that's from 1994. I guess Igby Goes Down sort of fits. I feel like a lot of Cameron Crowe movies deal with this. There's also St. Elmo's Fire (1985).

There's a fairly recent movie call Jeff, Who Lives at Home that might work for delayed adulthood, but it's not exactly about a young adult.

As for shows, I think pretty much any teen show that goes on long enough has to deal with this - Beverly Hills, 90210, That 70s Show, etc.

Raising Hope does this to a point, but it's a very quirky sort of comedy, so that might skew it a bit.

Thanks for the recs! I'll check them out.

By your standards, when do you see people having become adults, vs young adult? Is there an age, or are there certain accomplishments they have to meet?

You're welcome.

I think that some people sort of bypass the young adult and go right to adult - those very grounded people that other people look to because it feels like they know what they are doing. But most people take some time make the transition, some people longer than others. I'd say many people would be young adults up into their early twenties - often times going to college right after high school sort of delays adulthood as many people only have partial responsibility for themselves, with financial and other support from their families. After that, things get a little fuzzier, but if you're out of your twenties, I would not consider you a young adult.
