unsatisfactory writing

i'm writing a fic right now and i've been having such a difficult time getting the ball rolling, which isn't super uncommon for me (i get writer's block a lot) but this is kind of different? it's not a lack of ideas or ways to progress in the story, it's just that everything sounds dumb and amateur. it's a fanfic, and i haven't written fanfic since i was like 13, so maybe that's why, i dunno. it's kind of frustrating though, it feels like such crappy writing.

could be that i'm just rusty, since i haven't written anything in awhile.

You're just rusty. This happens to me every now and then in the RPs I write. I'll have tons of replies where I'm just ecstatic over how awesome I think they are, then I'll write an utter piece of shit. Write anyway. You can go back and change it. Sometimes after I've written it, I'll look at it a week later and go 'damn, I wish I had said it this way instead!', and it could be that getting your ideas out first, and then polishing them is what you need to do.

In the mean time, read a lot of other things, especially in the style you are trying to use. It'll help give you more ideas and vocabulary.

I think it's because you're not used to it. Keep going and revise it once you've got your groove back.

Even if you think it's bad, just keep writing. Once you've got the whole story out, focus on making it sound the way you want.

thanks for the support, guys! i usually write on paper and then type it out for safekeeping, and after typing it out last night i added/edited some things and it's looking a lot better. i always edit like crazy (to the point where i have no room in my margins anymore) and it's always been a healthy process for me, and i guess i forgot that. there's always a rough draft, as it is.
