Yuletide--SRS BSNS?

[personal profile] fenm 2012-10-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So... I've been thinking of signing up for Yuletide (it would be my first time), but it seem so... well... serious, and all. I find it a little intimidating, honestly. It doesn't help that I'm in a bit of a slump, and I'm a little concerned about finishing--yes, even though the deadline is two months away... anyone wanna give me pointers, reassurances, etc?

I think Yuletide can be extremely involving -- if you want it to be! You can also be very easygoing about it all, and do nothing more than sign up and subsequently write one story.

There is always a deadline when it comes to defaulting, where if you do it before that date, you won't be punished (i.e. banned from taking part next year). But if you're that worried about being in a slump, you could always look at people's letters first. Is there one that piques your interest? Perhaps even outright inspires you? If so, you could skew your offers a bit and hope you get assigned to that particular one.

Oh, where would I find those? Cuz, yeah, inspiration would help. (-:

For starters, I should probably explain that letters are just a longer version of people's signup requests. People post them publically as well (with additional info, such as general likes/dislikes and prompts), for treating purposes and such. Not everyone posts letters, though!

http://yuletide.livejournal.com/1092109.html - This is where people post links to their letters. There are many pages to go through, but there's also a spreadsheet that might make things easier for you... I say might, because I personally can't get it to function; CTRL+F doesn't work.

http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2012/signups/summary - And this is where the actual signup summary is, if you want to see exactly what has been requested so far (since, like I said, not everyone will post letters).

If you're interested in a particular fandom or something else, and can't find it on your own, lemme know! I might be able to point you in the right direction~

Oooh... helpful!
I'll have to take some time to look it over thoroughly.

I'm kinda hoping to write something for that new show, Perception.

do it do it do it do it!

I was like you and didn't do it for years because it seems really intimidating and there's lots of rules and they can banninate you if you default too many times! Eeep.

Here's the skinny: write 1000 words and turn it in on time. So easy. AO3 is so easy to use. So so sos sosososososos much simpler than the old archive where if you coded things wrong or used the wrong kinds of quote marks everything went kablooey.

You offer to write in a handful of fandoms and request a handful of fandoms (I would recommend going through the whole list of eligible fandoms with a piece of paper and writing down what you would be willing to write and what you want to request).

It is really not as intimidating as it seems.

Hee...

I am leaning towards doing it, I just need to do a little more research and give it a bit more thought...

I first did Yuletide last year, and I loved it. I'm used to taking my time and writing without a deadline, but I pulled through! I even arranged some local write-ins and made two good IRL friends I still hang out with! (Saw one today, actually!)

If you're hesitant to participate in actual Yuletide, you can write a treat. They're mentioned in the Yuletide FAQ, but basically it's a fic you write for a participant based on their prompt because you want to. Since you wouldn't be an official Yuletide participant, nothing would happen to you if your fic is late (then it would be a New Year's Resolution fic instead) or you don't post at all.

But I dived in full-tilt last year and had a blast. Received two good fics, too! (One by my assigned author, one treat!) I hope you do join in the fun. It's great! C:
