Blanketing an entire genre with hatred is such a huge dismissal of many artists (the vast majority byfar) who will never get a chance to reach your ears simply because you happened to dislike the first few songs/other artists you heard.
I can think of many instances of friends declaring their hatred of rap, rock and most relevant to this case, dubstep, until they found that one artist or song that made them think otherwise and want to explore the genre further.
Just saying that it pays to keep an open mind. You never know what you could be closing out if you choose to limit yourself by saying silly things like, "I hate dubstep!" It also makes you look a bit silly in front of your peers if you actually happen to find something you do like. Would the secret posted even be a secret at all if the OP wasn't vocal of their hatred of the genre? Probably not.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 10:00 am (UTC)(link)People use blanket terms to refer to their opinions because this is how the human mind works. We sort things into categories. That's why genres even exist.
It would be no different to claim you hate "assholes," because while that can cover a huge amount of people, it's still pretty obvious you're talking about the shared trait of being abrasive / acting like a jerk, and not necessarily all individual people that could come to fall under that label, ever.
For the record, I'm the secret poster, and I have no further interest in dubstep to speak of. This song was an exception, not an eye-opener.
Because it falls under the dubstep genre, does not mean I like the general traits of dubstep music. The "wub wubs," or what have you. Can't stand them.
I'm not trying to collect bands, either, so if I miss out on a few things I might like by avoiding the genre, I can easily live with that. Exposing myself to that kind of grating irritation is more of a consequence than losing out, I think.
And it is a bit silly that I would be posting a secret like this, but it's also silly to think this is some source of important internal conflict in my mind. It isn't.
It's nothing I'm going to freak out if my friends find out I like this song, if they even care, even if it might make me a little embarrassed in a humorous sort of way.
You're taking it a little too seriously.

Telling somebody to keep an open mind is taking it too seriously?

Alrighty, then. Have fun with your negativity and good day, sir.
