I've always kind of thought that way, too. Eckhart deserved a lot more attention than he got, and Ledger's death probably did contribute a lot to that. But how the film (indeed, the entire franchise) would have been without Ledger's death is something we can never really know. Even so, I will speculate that Two-Face probably would have been praised as some realistic fall from grace (though how realistic it really is is highly debatable).
