Well, I saw it more as Patty was always the "absolute power corrupts absolutely," theme, and Ellen knew that, but was seduced into the lifestyle anyways, and at the end felt that she had just done too much wrong to ever be a lawyer again. Giving it all up was her penance.

But yeah, your interpretation's valid as well.

OP here. I like yours better! Avoiding corruption is a great reason not to be lawyer. Ellen quitting and having the little girl Patty didn't have made me sad for some reason. Your interpretation is more empowering.
