Re: The last fic you read?

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-10-20 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Been a while since I finished a fic. I've been working on alternate sixth year Snarry longfic since last night ( http://snape-potter.dreamwidth.org/309834.html ).

Oh, wait I read aldora89's TOS K/S fic 'Crash and Burn' ( http://archiveofourown.org/works/478660/chapters/831309 ) a few weeks ago. Wonderful fic.

I recommend all of aldora89's fics.

I think you recced Crash and Burn to me, and it was indeed wonderful!

Wait wait wait, you're avioleta? I haven't gotten to the BB stories yet but In Time, Once Again was amazing!

I think by "working on" she meant reading it. Like, working her way through the story? Idk, that's the way I read it.

What tyger66 said. Maybe "working on" is regional slang? I've used before on the internet to say "doing something" (reading, writing, studying, cooking, etc.) and confused people.

Sorry, I'm not avioleta.

oh, good, I was right. I was worried I had answered on your behalf and been totally wrong for a minute there. XD

Where I live, usually people would say "working through," because "working on" does imply that you are creating/writing/building/etc whatever the "something" in question is. But while the intended interpretation might be unclear to some, it's not an incorrect use of the phrase.

What region are you from, if I may ask?

Re: The last fic you read?

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-10-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
SE Texas. "Working through" also makes sense to me, but that's not a phrase I would use. It's either "working on" or I'd specifically say "I'm reading..." But, since the OP asked what we'd read, I used the general "working on."

I'm curious if this is regional usage for Texas (SE or otherwise) or something I picked up from my parents (who were partially raised in other states).

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not a way I've ever heard the phrase used in Alabama (or anywhere else), and I'm just going to go out on a limb and say you probably just picked it up from your parents. I've picked up a lot of random phrases from my parents, and as a result I've confused soooo many people, lol.

I'm originally from Texas (DFW area), and I'd say "working through" for reading, and save "working on" for something I was creating. I suspect tyger66 is right, and you picked it up from your parents or somewhere else.

(Now watch, another Texan will comment saying they use that phrase the way you do all the time.)

I'm still writing my Snarry BB fic. *sighs* 176,232 words and counting. I'm hoping to have it done in time for 'Son of BB'. I think I'm last.

The Boy Who Died A Lot is excellent, btw! GREAT story!

Re: The last fic you read?

176 thousand words and counting? That's already three novels. Good lord!

I wish you the best of luck. 176 thousand words. Wow.

Your ability to put words on the page is amazing. I wish I had that kind of output.

MUST HAVE.

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
WOAH. PLEASE let the community (or at least me!) know when you are finished!

Are you allowed to give a summary, or vague description of the plot? Like, post-books, massive AU, MPreg, marriage!fic, etc, whatever applies.

Sorry, it's just that Snarry is my original OTP and I'm always looking for more insanely long fic, especially since the fandom "classics" just don't really do it for me.

Re: MUST HAVE.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
What have you read already? If you don't mind Snarry + Harry/Snape/3rd person and other not Snarry pairings, I highly recommend Fifth House by ky. It's a wip though. http://www.hpfandom.net/eff/viewstory.php?sid=42895

asecretchord's Battle for the Dark Arts wip is really long too. Forced bonding from potions mishap. It's great!

TWO AMAZING SNARRY RECS

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've read basically ALL the stuff from HP's heyday, but not much in the last three years or so.

Hmmm....in the first one, who is the third person? Because I don't think I can handle another badly written Harry/Snape/Lucius or Harry/Snape/Draco clusterfuck.

As a rule, I avoid WIPs, but since you personally recommended them, I suppose I will check them out. (The second one, at least!)

~~~~~~~
Now, I'm sure you've probably read these, but I will rec two amazing novel-length Snarry fics in case anyone stumbles onto this thread later tonight:
First is Flawed Lines, which (to me) is probably one of the definitive pieces in Snarry fandom. It has it all: Dursleys horribly abuse Harry, Snape rescues him and realizes how wrong he's been about Harry, relationship develops organically, etc. Unfortunately, the author pulled it a few years ago, but I have a text file with the whole fic on it saved to my fanfic folder. (This one does seem to rely on ALL the cliches of the pairing, but it does them well and was written before they became such cliches. Like....can you fault Romeo and Juliet for being cliched when it INVENTED the cliches?)
Like I said, the author pulled this one, but I saved it, and luckily someone else had the same idea, so here's a link:
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/fiction0/Flawed_Lines.html
And of course Sanguis Vinculum, THE potions accident fic! It's novel-length, and the relationship develops at a very slow pace, which is a must-have for me when it comes to such complicated relationships. SO GOOD OMG.
A Snarry Rec
[personal profile] asecretchord 2012-10-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel really awkward pimping my own stuff, but if you like fairly long, angsty-ish stories, you might like No Sign of Love. I received a lot of positive feedback on it and a few people recced it, so...anyway, yeah. *blushes*
Re: TWO AMAZING SNARRY RECS
(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Were you the one asking for recent Snarry recs before? I don't remember where the thread was but if you go to the snape potter comm and click on masterlist at the top of the tag list, you should see all the recent fests and masterlists with word count and rating information.
The Snarry 3some pairing in Fifth House is not Lucius or Draco. It is none of the usual Snarry 3some pairings, don't worry. I don't want to say who it is because it's a very big spoiler.
What I like most about Fifth House is how it feels like a high fantasy adventure, not a 150 thousand word long romance novel. There is a lot of worldbuilding and ky's ideas are very unique for a 10 year old massive fandom. The plot is very dense and the updates are worth the wait. It is very, very good!
I don't think I've read Flawed Lines but I've heard of it. Meri's Sanguis Vinculum is a classic and one of my favorites. I love stories where the pairing has to learn to understand and work with each other, to care for each other. SV fits the bill to a t.
Re: MUST HAVE.
[personal profile] asecretchord 2012-10-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! Thanks! Just in case anyone is wondering, I have not abandoned Battle for the Dark Arts, not at all. It just got caught behind the behemoth that was supposed to be my BB fic. When I'm done with this one, I'll go back to it. I promise. :)
Here's the summary for my Snarry Big Bang, called Birth of a Dancing Star:
Following the war, Harry faces some hard truths about himself that he'd avoided thinking about while hunting Horcruxes. After viewing Snape's memories and nursing the cantankerous Potions Master back to health, Harry comes to understand that his feelings for the Half Blood Prince are more than a simple crush. No one is more surprised than Harry, though, when he winds up pregnant after a night of passion, but when a strange potion appears in Snape's quarters, it appears that his pregnancy is more than just another strange thing in the life of Harry Potter.
I'm hoping to have it finished by the beginning of November, but it won't post until January.
OK, SO THIS STARTED AS A SHORT REPLY, AND TURNED INTO A LOVE LETTER TO FANDOM
[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-20 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
HIGH FIVE TO THE MAXXXX!
See, Harry Potter was my first actual FANDOM that I was involved in. It through HP that I discovered that fanfiction even existed. And all I could find at the beginning was horrible second-person "You Are Having an Arranged Marriage to Draco Malfoy" shit. Because I didn't even know fanfic was enough of a thing to have its own website. And one day, I happened across something labeled "SLASH! if you don't know what it is don't read it," so of course I had to. And thus I read my first Harry/Draco fic.
So yeah, I accidentally discovered slash when I was in...7th (maybe 8th?) grade, and Harry/Draco was the only think I read at first. When I found out other pairings existed, I was a little squicked out, and then- what?! SNARRY?! My first reaction was a resounding "EURGHHH!!"
BUT THEN I READ ONE.
And I realized how much time I'd been wasting with this prettyboy/prettyboy Harry/Draco stuff when there was something SO MUCH BETTER! I discovered my first kinks through Snarry. I mean, student/teacher? check. Massive age difference? check. (especially Snape with almost-legal-but-not-quite Harry) Not-so-pretty older guy with an adorably sexy younger guy? CHECK OMG. (I realize now that this basically all boils down to age difference kink, lol) And because of Snarry, I discovered whole lj communities exclusively devoted to specific pairings or situations, and that basically, whatever I wanted to read, chances were someone had written it.
I didn't even know that what I had been reading wasn't what I really liked, because I liked it more than anything ELSE I had read before. So Snarry kind of....opened my eyes to something that had been missing in my life. Not just slash fanfiction or gay porn or whatever, but fandom. I found out that I wasn't alone, and that there were people I could talk to other than the kids I went to school with, who always made fun of me for reading too much and loving HP as much as I did (which was probably a little TOO much, tbh). At any rate, this has probably reached essay-length by now, so I'll cut off my rambling here.
TL;DR I LOVE SNARRY; IT OPENED THE DOOR INTO FANDOM FOR ME.
Snarry party!
