Pretty sure I'm defending myself against being told I'm a shallow person who is looking for congratulatory pats on the back and who has designs on being a SJW.

I know the two don't compare. I'm just not exactly happy with basically being called too lazy to stand up for anything that matters.

I...wasn't attempting to draw an analogy. Unless I was reading the comment wrong, I was being told that I'd chosen the subject matter because I don't have the guts to stand up for anything that matters. I assumed Visp meant real world as well as internet.

The addendum was something of a pre-mature kneejerk reaction to the reply I perceived I might get/trying to head that reply off at the pass. It was probably ill-advised by my frustration.

My apologies. When I read "advocating for a student who was the victim of a hate crime and is afraid to go to the police because where he comes from they hurt more than help." I interpreted it as you comparing that to your claim about women forcing men out of fandom.

Nonono. That was seriously what I was doing before I logged into fandomsecrets and found Visp's comment. Soul-searching, making a list of boundaries, and speaking to peers about just how involved I should get in the situation. I've only been at the ESL thing for a few years and while I've run into plenty of racism and horribleness, this is my first time in a situation this specific. It makes me ill and I'm honestly confused. We're told not to get involved with this sort of thing, and that is what most of my aforementioned peers also recommended, but I'm not sure I can just stand by while knowing I can help.

I have no trouble believing that visp meant exactly what she said: that because OP talked about seeing a form of discrimination visp doesn't want to believe actually happens, visp believes OP must be a lying coward who doesn't care about people who are ACTUALLY oppressed.

Me, I think it's obvious that visp is the coward. She doesn't have the courage to believe that the world might be more complex than "some people are the oppressed, and they never do any oppressing of their own" and "some people are the oppressors and they couldn't possibly ever be oppressed by anyone."
