Okay, I'mma throw it out there for people.
THIS MOVIE IS NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY.
All it is is an hour and a half of you crying over pet death. There are three deaths of animals in this movie that will affect you like this secret or have you SOBBING.
Minus the animal deaths, THEY ARE THE ONLY CHARACTERS YOU WILL CONNECT WITH. Everyone in that movie is absolutely one dimensional and BORING. The main character has no lovable qualities or anything to relate to. He is Victor out of Corpse Bride shrunk down, and removed of any personality WHATSOEVER.
The dogs had a more interesting and meaningful relationship than the main and the girl. The supposed "villianous" character is not even needed, and there is no real PLOT. There's this bare idea and it's like they are trying to stretch it out until the threads are gonna snap.
The ONLY character who has any real substance to him gets booted out halfway through the fucking movie!
Burton has deeply fallen and this is a D movie at the very most. You're better off watching the little short than wasting your time here.

I've been getting a sense from the promotional materials that the "villain" is a Japanese stereotype. Would you say that's true?

Well the character in question isn't a villain. He's one of the antagonists in a sense but he's not the main foil. There really is no main "villain".

As for the stereotype question... I kept an eye out for anything racist but besides his Japanese accent the only thing that really could be considered a reference to his ethnicity is that his monster counterpart is a turtle that becomes a Godzilla-type creature.

Some people point to the fact that he's very studious and wants to win the science fair as a reference to Asian stereotypes but all the other kids in the movie are in the same exact position.

He's a partial villian. They start by painting out one character who seems like he will be, but the japanese kid and others end up playing a more villainous role, focusing on their own selfish desires.

And considering the original secret was about her cat dying, there's spoilers here too. Japanese kid makes Godzilla. Cheap. As. Hell.

If it's a turtle, wouldn't it be Gamera instead of Godzilla?
