(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 05:16 am (UTC)(link)Japan has a drinking culture, that's no lie. If you're in business, you drink or else you are weird. But it's social drinking. It's not a serious competition of who can drink more, at least never at the social, casual, business level. They might challenge each other for fun, but OP is taking it far more seriously than they should.
"Hurr hurr I can drink moar alcohol than you so I am better" is mostly reserved for lower-class shadier people. And you'll hardly see anybody respectable try to do it to be "tough." Even in anime you'll see that it's the "rough, tough" characters who do it and almost never the nice ones.
I imagine OP going to Japan then boasting about how their Irish/Russian/German heritage allows them to drink more, and most people being puzzled at them for being proud of needing to spend more money to reach an acceptable, comfortable level of drunk.
