No one lives a person's actual life, but themself.

Actually, I'd disagree with you there! I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't think anyone really belongs to him- or herself. Our "freedom" to live is bounded in by all different kinds of factors -- our families, our friends, our bodies, our societies, etc., etc.

Also, it's not so much a matter of "I might make them feel sad," but "I might take a piece of them with me." It's hard enough getting over the death of a loved one, let alone a loved one whom you couldn't protect or save from suicidal circumstances.
