Re: What to do after a car crash?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very normal to be jittery and upset after a car accident - even a minor one. Everyone I know who's ever been in an accident and discussed it with me reported not wanting to drive (or ride their bikes or whatever) for at least a few days afterward.

I've been in three extremely minor accidents as a driver (also the only ones I've been in as an adult). Two involved snow and ice - in the first case, a guy behind me couldn't stop in time when traffic backed up and slowed down and he very gently rear-ended me (no damage to either car), and in the second case, I half-way spun out making a turn and was stopped by a curb and another woman (again, gently) hit the side of my car at the wheel well (surprisingly, no damage that time either, despite the fact that I was now driving a newer, lighter-weight car).

The third time was in a parking lot in broad daylight and dry conditions. That one was an extremely frustrating situation, as I was technically at fault, but I had been moving very slowly and repeatedly looking in all directions. If you ask me, the other driver was moving way too fast for a parking lot and not paying attention to whether any other cars had their reverse lights on, but at the end of the day, it was still I who hit her with the front of my car, not the other way around. I still feel both guilty and angry about it at the same time. Also, I was about 1 hour into a 5 hour drive and had no choice but to keep going because I had to be in a certain place by that afternoon (and even if I could have turned around and gone home, that still would have been another hour of driving).

So yeah, I get it. An accident is a bit of a traumatic experience regardless of the actual outcome. I don't really have advice for dealing, but I lost my jitters within a day or two simply by continuing to drive. As for your employer, I'd try to bring up the subject again, maybe including an apology for not calling ahead to tell them you would be late (assuming you didn't do that) and explain you were just too upset and worried about the biker to think properly.
