I lost interest for some things in fandom, then found a different media fandom that made me feel like participating again. I used to be hard into novel, then manga, then TV show... all of that seem "been there, done that, won't invest that much time into that again, just enjoy reading / watching the original material".
And then I discovered a band I liked and felt the need to talk about with others, got sucked into boards to keep up with the news first, and ended up making friends there so staying for the conversations... even reading fic occasionally even though I was very against RPF before that.
It's always a conjunction of what you find and what you need. That new fandom happened in my life when work and real life events made me need an escape again.
