I just hate how they'd always show up as a side pairing in fics for the pairing I wanted to read. Even if warned for. I'm petty, I'll admit it.

But I ship Clint/Coulson so I have like no leg to stand on because they show up in other fics not about them all the time and if I didn't like them I'd be pissed.

Yeah, I side eye all the Clint/Coulson secondary that slips into my Steve/Tony. The pairing itself doesn't annoy me so much as the almost obligatory Death Fix Explanation plot detour.

DA

I do the exact opposite and resent Steve/Tony for being in my Clint/Coulson. XD

So...multiple pairings are a risky business when you want to attract readers, I guess. :)

Heh, I find it kind of amusing (along with my annoyance) that there's so much overlap in Steve/Tony and Clint/Coulson writers. I have a theory about them both being pairings a lot of people came into the movie with, so they just kept shipping them even if the interactions weren't what was expected/hoped for and, y'know, the whole death thing happening. Which is fine! Ship what you like! But yeah. Pettiness.

at least once the SHIELD tv series is out that won't be an issue anymore.

I haven't encountered unexpected!Steve/Tony so far (or maybe I just never notice because I don't mind them) but what is it with the constant Clint/Coulson out of nowhere? Why?! Argh. SMH.

They probably assume you don't mind because it's such a minor background pairing (usually) and it makes the writing more fun for them.

Back in the good old days where I used to fill any prompt thrown at me, I would end up writing pairings that I either didn't like or found squicky. I would cope by throwing in background mentions of pairings I did like. So...there's that too. I'm sure there's more than one Steve/Tony author who writes it because it's popular and not because they necessarily care for it that much. :)
