I do like long plot-filled fics as well as small fluffy things, and sometimes I just want to sit down with a nice long fic to read rather than pure fluff or porn. But I do get what you mean about the writers trying to be too clever and academic - I think the worst one I've come across is that Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality fic, because I read it on a rec that it was "really clever and questions all the things that should be questioned in Harry Potter, with science!" and then it was just. Eurgh.
