lol I kind of agree, in the sense that I would rather read IC porn about Character A than an OOC fic about his descent into madness or whatever your headcanon for him is. I respect people who do that because it's therapeutic for them, but for some authors they seem to show off how smart and mature they are as a writer by not writing "dumb porn".

I think some people have that sort of snooty attitude about it, but not all or even really the majority of gen fic writers are like that. There are plenty of reasons that people don't write porn, a major one generally being that they just don't enjoy it. I've written porn in the past, but I'd honestly rather read someone else's porn than write my own because writing it doesn't really do that much for me (whereas reading it does). And someone saying they prefer exploring characterization or focusing on plot is not always the equivalent of saying that they think porn is inherently dumb or that they think they think they're too mature to write it. Unless they've stated as much or are generally an asshole about it, it probably is just a legitimate preference and not a value judgment on anyone who enjoys the pornier side of fandom. *shrugs*

I don't like to write porn. I write shippy stuff, but porn... not my thing. i'll push it to an R rating if the story warrants it.

This secret seems more trollish than anything.

I think fanfic is a great way to practice writing. I work on original stuff too, but I find when I hit a wall with my original, I run back to fanfic and write an unrelated fanfic story and it gets the creative juices flowing again.

Maybe I'm missing the point of the secret.

What if you're just legitimately disinterested in / squicked out by porn?
Because I am, and it's not from trying to be some kind of fake intellectual type.

I'm not talking about everyone who writes gen (and I don't think that is what the OP does either) just that they are some people who sound like they write plotty gen fic with more or less IC characterization because they're WRITERS who write SERIOUS STUFF. It's probably just a few people among others who want to have fun outside of writing sex but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, those people are assholes and give the majority of people who just like to write gen fic because it's what they prefer a bad name.

Seconding this. I skip over any porn scenes in fiction, fan or otherwise. Because I'm going to find it either boring or very creepy, and I'd rather not ruin the story for myself that way.

I do this too....The explicit stuff just tends to throw me out of the story.
