secret #7 made me think...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
A few months ago I turned 18 and immediately started panicking because OH SHIT I'M GETTING OLD AND MOST MY HOBBIES ARE SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE NOW. Then I remembered that most of the people in my fandoms are twice my age and realized I was being ridiculous. But then I went on tumblr and saw a 14-year-old complaining about "old people" in fandom, and the panic came back.

I can't help wondering if I'll still feel this way when I'm actually an old person, or if I'll get over it and stop worrying about my age so much.

no 14-year-old should ever have any impact on your self-worth for any reason. Think about when *you* were 14. Did you have any opinions of value whatsoever? ... exactly.

There are grandmothers in fandom. They seem to be doing fine.

You'll get over it. The older you get, the less of a rat's ass you'll give about other people's opinions.

As an admitted old person in my fourth decade and fast approaching my fifth, believe me, what a 14-year-old cares about your age is pretty much BS.

Unless, of course, you're trying to date said 14-year-old, and then, ew.

lmao @ 18 being old. You might feel that way now but you're also very wrong. And I'm not even saying this in a 'god, you kids are idiots' way. Just...your life has barely begun. Four years is not THAT much difference. Granted, a lot can change in four years, but...four years isn't some huge, unimaginable gap. (Now, I realize it might feel like it to some teenagers, and of course they are allowed to feel that way...but it isn't.)

I'm not saying this as someone who has lived and seen much or anything like that...I still don't know what the fuck is going on, but I realize there are plenty people out there who probably view me as a 'spring chicken', and they aren't entirely wrong.

Plus...older people aren't allowed to have fun too? I don't even get this logic. Some people grow out of things and others don't; what's fun to you now might not always be fun to you, or it might. Don't worry so much about it. No one is going to come to your house and disconnect your computer and ban you from fandom because you've reached some arbitrary age that no one should give a shit about. (Plus, if they DO, you probably have a cell. Problem solved. If they try to take your cell, knee them in the crotch.)

I really hate the notion that, once you hit a certain age, you have to drop certain hobbies, and if you don't drop them you are a horrible excuse for an adult.

You can still be into fandom, comics, games, whatever. I imagine that, in general, you'll comport yourself a little differently than younger members of the fandom, but... I mean, what, are you supposed to just wake up one day and magically no longer care about something you've been passionate about for however-long?

Every time I feel old, I look at my bookshelves and start counting until I find an author under the age of 50.

Everything out there in pop culture is multigenerational. Lassiter admires Tezuka and Miyazaki, who admired Disney, Jones, and Fleischer. Danny Elfman not only covered Calloway, he cosplayed Calloway. This Sucker Punch trailer uses a sample of Led Zepplin's 70s love-letter to Little Walter's over-amplified harmonica riffs from the 40s covering Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe from the 20s, which in turn, is a hybridized musical tradition with roots in Africa and Europe.
