It's because fandom doesn't like lesbians.

Fandom is dominated by heterosexual females, and so the type of slash that dominates is the M/M variety. F/F is "disgusting" to most people.

It's funny, because a lot of the people who will trash F/F will also praise M/M for how "progressive" it is. "Oh, look at how supportive we are of gay rights!"

I... think you may be overstating the case. I don't think most, or even many, fans find F/F "disgusting". I think it's plausible that many heterosexual females find F/F boring, because it does nothing for them personally.

But have you had a lot of experiences with people acting as you describe? I don't know whether to ask you to tell me where so I can avoid it, or to go back to determinedly assuming most people in fandom are bright enough not to... to... well, call F/F "disgusting".

(The one decent explanation I've seen for someone not wanted to read porn with women was that they are female and asexual, and descriptions of female anatomy makes it feel too personal... It made more sense in their words.)

This comment is ridiculous.

And I don't think I've ever run into anyone in LJ-based fandom who would call femmeslash "disgusting".

There are a lot more queer women in fandom than you think. For various reasons, most of them write more slash and/or het than they do femslash, but their writing habits aren't due to them finding sex with women repellent, ffs.

"Disgusting"? Never seen that one... I have seen this adjective applied to het fic, but never femslash.

No, the truth is probably that femslash tends to attract straight males and lesbians more than heterosexual females who do indeed dominate slash fandom - though I have seen more than one bi or lesbian fan prefer to write and read slash (and a lot of female fans define themselves as bi).

However, as a straight female fan, I myself prefer m/m to f/f simply because f/f rarely does anything for me.

Like most slash fans, I read m/m because I enjoy it, not because I am socially "progressive" or open-minded. Reading slash is not and never has been about supporting gay rights and anyone who told you that was sadly mistaken (or a man): writing and reading m/m fanfiction is about female empowerment, for and about women. Objectifying men for women's purposes is not about men, even gay ones. And it is not about social enlightement, that's for sure.

Your comment simply shows that you don't know much about slash fandom. This is the kind of basic error I would expect from a m/f fan or a man, actually.
