That was all very well and good for Buffy, but it was Spike's character that was thrown under a fleet of Greyhounds to enable that amazing development of hers. He was the one done a huge disservice, IMO, and only recovered once he was far, far away from her and being her drama catalyst.

The one good thing about it was that it was a flip of the usual recipe of a female character being ruined in order to develop a male character, but I don't like that anyone needs to go down for someone else to be complex.

oh, i totally agree with you, but Spike being the whipping boy in every situation on BTVS and Angel never wavered, so it was consistent, at least

i was never in a Buffy internet fandom, but most of what i've read from fans many years later is that they rejected Spike simply because he wan't ~Angel~ and that he is vile because 'he tried to rape her'...the fact that he ended up being the chosen vampire with a soul who could yield the amulet, who sacrificed himself to close the hellmouth meant nothing because omg!angel is tru luv!

...danm, now i need to watch the series all over again, i just realised how much i miss it

Yeah, him being the universal whipping boy is very true. I have no idea why they wanted to take such a wicked awesome character and break him down, build him up, break him down, etc. And that's funny, what I got from the internet fandom was that Spike was her twu wuv and Angel was the ponce. But both interpretations are off. Angel and Spike were the same for Buffy, highly toxic despite their aptitude for genuine heroism and love.

I just finished BtVS season one! Dated in some ways (lol what is fashion and filming budget), but the script and acting holds up great. I'm looking forward to season two and Spike's debut, it'll be great to see him at his best and baddest again.

THE BOOTS! my gawd, buffy's knee-high boots in seasons 1...i always imaged that they had a very small budget and they were SMG's favourite boots, so she just wore them constantly
