I don't think there is anything wrong with saying "It sucks that my favorite slash pairing could never be canon because media is so heteronormative" as long as that person acknowledges that that is different from the issue of "It sucks that the media is so heteronormative," that the second issue is more important, and you don't get to pretend that whining or flailing about slash pairings makes you some big contributor to gay rights.
